Sitges has 17 sand beaches. Four of them are in the East: the first one called Les Botigues at the beginning of the coast, next to the beachs of Castelldefels and the other three are following the coast of Garraf (Road C-31). There are eleven urban beaches and two in the west. These last two have difficult access.

All the eastern and urban beaches have access facilities, flags indicating the state of the sea and most of them have quality diplomas and blue flags awarded by the European Union.

Beach time! (tip 3: South of Barcelona)

One of the Vilanova's beaches (December 2005)

I know much better the area South of Barcelona. The landscapes may be not so spectacular as in La Costa Brava, but if your aim is a good beach, some sightseeing, and good food, you'll find there plenty as well.

Sitges has an interesting old town, nice shops, and very good beaches (that tend to be too crowded indeed), and it's a popular place for gay people (just in case this mean anything to you, it's a very popular place for families and honeymooners as well). Check this link for more info: sitgestour.com

Vilanova i la Geltrú may be not so charming and well-known as Sitges. However, there is a beautiful promenade and an interesting small medieval quarter. The main beach is excellent, and the prices of lodging and food are more reasonable. So, you can visit both in a daytrip or better a weekend trip, there are trains from Barcelona each 20 minutes departing from Passeig de Gracia or Sants. Is 30 minutes to Sitges and 40 to Vilanova. You may have a look here: vilanovageltru.com, here: vilanovaturisme.net or at my (still to be completed) Vilanova VT page

I cannot recommend you any specific place to stay, as my mother lives in an apartment on the beach in Vilanova i la Geltrú. So, never used accommodation on this area ;-)

If you have access to transportation, drive the 30 miles to Sitges. I found the resort town charming. Of course, we went during the off season and most places were closed but we still enjoyed it after the hussle and bussle of Barcelona.

Just a note for those who care ... since I saw very few people while there, I didn't know until later that it's known for being gay-friendly.

The town of Sitges is not very lively out of season but still you won't go hungy there. Nice place to walk around. It can also be easily reached by suburban train from Barcelona.
It is very popular with gay people for beach holidays.

    Sitges International Film Festival
Every Fall this festival, devoted to the sci-fi/Fantastic films, takes place in a cool town outside Barcelona(25 min. train ride). It is nothing like San Sebastian or Cannes Film Fest but its importance is growing each year.

Sitges is a town located by the sea on the south of Barcelona. Nice beaches, good restaurants, lots of things to do and trendy nightlife are some of the qualities of Sitges. It is also a must for gay & lesbian travellers as there are many bars, hotels discos & beaches addressed to gay people.
