The communications tower designed by Santiago Calatrava became a part of Montjuic landmark in 1992. Its very unique shape is at the same time very typical for Calatrava's architecture. His great projects include: City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Olympic Stadium in Athens and great bridges in many cities of Spain, Athens and Buenos Aires.

The communication tower, designed for the telecommunications company Telefonica, is just beyond the large plaza in front of Palau Sant Jordi Sports Stadium, the heart of the 1992 Olympic site. Santiago Calatrava's original communications tower was built to carry coverage of the Games. Aside from its distinctive structural form, the tower is innovative in enclosing the circular platform of microwave dishes, replacing the normal clutter with a serene white arc. As a result the 130 meter structure becomes a welcome feature in the Olympic park.
Apparently, the form of the tower is based on a Calatrava sketch of a kneeling figure making an offering. The base on which the figure 'kneels' is covered in broken glazed tiles in recognition of Gaudi. The orientation of the tower projects the shadow of the central needle on the circular platform acts as a sundial.

The architectural marvel known as the Torre de Calatrava was built just before the 1992 Olympic games as a communications tower for broadcasting the games to the world. It is a highly visible landmark in Montjuïc and it caused great controversy at the time it was built.
It stands 616 feet (188 meters) tall and was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava (hence the name) who is known for his elegantly engineered bridges. Despite strong resistance from his peers, the communications tower was erected and the result is quite stunning.

The torre calatrava is a 119 metres tall tower which marks barcelona's skyline. It has the double function of a telecommunication antenna and sundial. which I found quite interesting. Another interesting detail is that the angle of its "stem" has the same angle as the sun-light on the day of the summer solstice. Maybe one day it will be remembered as the modern stonehenge

This white thing outside the olympic arena is a communication tower and it represents an athlet being decorated with a gold medal. Had no idea what it was when I took the photo, but mmurie here at VT told me what it was, and cleared out the long mystery.

The communications tower is probably the most prominent landmark on the Montjuic Olympic campus. The slender and elegant design by Santiago Calatrava was finished in 1991.
