Getting from the Airport to City Centre

Barcelona's El Prat airport lies around 13km southwest of the city centre, and there are a few different transport options to get you into town.

The easiest (and of course most expensive) of these options is to catch a taxi. There is a taxi rank just outside the arrivals hall. When we arrived in Barcelona for our latest visit it was a Friday evening and we wanted to get into town as quickly as we could so we could go out to dinner - so taxi was the best solution for us. Although at this time there was a long queue of people waiting for a cab, there was also a constant flow of empty taxi's arriving and it didn't take us too long until we were on our way. A taxi to the city centre costs between 20-30 euro depending on extra charges for luggage etc.

Another easy option is to catch the A1 Aerobus, which departs every 10-15 minutes from outside the arrivals terminal. The bus takes 30-40 minutes and costs around 3.75 euro - you can buy your ticket on the bus. The bus goes to Placa Espana and Placa Catalunya.

On our first visit to Barcelona we caught the train from the airport to the city centre. The RENFE train service departs every 30 mins or so, and the trip to the city centre takes approximately 25 minutes. You can get off the train at Barcelona Sants or Passeig de Gracia and change onto the metro from there if required. A oneway ticket from the airport to Sants station costs around 2.60 euro.

    Metro: Metro
  • Tip Rating:
  • Barcelona is a very walkable city, though for those less able, or those who enjoy trying out the local transport, then the TMB Metro is the go. There are 6 lines - L1, L2, L3, L4, L5 & L11, plus also part of the network is the funicular railway that runs from Paral·lel metro stop to Parc de Montjuic.

The metro runs from 5am to midnight Sun-Thu and from 5am to 2am on Fri & Sat. Some of the lines criss-cross in the centre of Barcelona, though you may find you seem to walk for ages underground to change from one line to another.

Tickets can be bought from the ticket office at each station or from the ticket machines which operate in a few different languages. You can buy single tickets or books of ten single tickets if you are planning a few single trips during your stay.

If you are planning a few trips within the same day you may be better off buying a one-day pass (T-Dia), which costs 5.25 euro for zone 1 (Feb 2007). Or depending on the length of your visit, and how often you think you will use the metro, you may want to consider a 2, 3, 4, or 5 day pass.

Full details of all the tickets and pricing can be found on the website below.

    By Plane: Getting to Barcelona
  • Tip Rating:
  • Both times we have visited Barcelona we flew from London Gatwick airport - the first time with Easyjet and the second time with British Airways. The flight from London takes between 1.5 - 2 hours. British Airways also fly there from London Heathrow, and Easyjet from Luton and Stansted as well. Other airlines that fly there from London include Iberia and Air Berlin.

The airport is located around 13km from the city centre.

If you are already in Spain, you may want to catch a train to Barcelona. It has good rail links to other Spanish cities, such as Madrid (4.5 hours) and Valencia (3 hours). I have also heard that you can get cheap flights between Barcelona and Madrid.

    Metro: Metro (subway)
  • Tip Rating:
  • BCN has 5 lines of Metro. There is also another subway trains system in the city, the "Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat", and the difference is that these depend on the Regional Gov instead of the Municipal Authorities...

Price: 1,05 euros. This allows you to use ONLY the metro, but there are 1 day "all transports" tickets (from 4,40 to 12,50 euros, depending on the zone) that allow you to use any transport inside the city for 24 hours (http://www.tmb.net/cat/titols/t_dia.jsp)

There 2-3-4-5 days travel cards, valid for Metro and bus. You can buy them online at the web below or at the Metro stations.

Walking: This city is made for walking
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most of the nicest streets in Barcelona are pedestrian and parking seems to be impossible, so driving is probably not the best option.

I have been told the metro system is quite efficient, but I think the city is very walkable.

If you take Plaza Catalunya as a starting point, you can get to the Columbus statue the end of "Las Ramblas" in 10 minutes. You can also get to "Casa Batllo" in less than that and "La Pedrera" is not much further away.

"La Sagrada Familia" seems very far away on the map, but if the weather is nice, it can also be reached on foot.

In order to see all the interesting things, walking is probably the best option.

Of course, if you are going to "Park Guell" it is better to take the bus.

Taxis in Barcelona are black and yellow, easy to spot. You can stop one in the street if the green light on top of the car is on. At the end of the journey, you should only pay the amount on the taximeter, plus supplements from/to airport, luggage, etc (if applicable). We locals usually only tip the driver just to round to next figure or, let's say, a couple of euros (for instace, short trip with taximeter = 5.15, give 6 euros; airport to city centre = 28.30 (taximetre and all airport and other applicable supplements), in this case you may give 30 euros.

A good practice is asking for a receipt, the taxi driver has the obligation to give you one if asked to. In case you have any complaint is your only proof.

You can check the link below about official taxi fares in Barcelona, updated for year 2007
    Hope it helps!

Funicular / Blue Tram: Blue Tram
  • Tip Rating:
  • This lovely old style wooden tram goes up the Tibidabo Hill from "Avinguda del Tibidabo" FGC stop to the funicular that goes to the top.
As the tram goes at snail pace up the hill, you can admire some of the beautiful houses built in both sides of the street.
2,90 euros return ticket. 10 minutes.

The Bus Turístic is probably one of the best ways to get around Barcelona and see many of the popular sites. This tour company has put together a network of three routes that circle the city and connect quite well with each other. One of the best benefits is purchasing the two day ticket which allows you to jump on and off the bus at any of its stops. The bus runs till 7pm I believe and starts at 9 am. The fare was 20 Euros for the two day ticket (16 for a single day). This can change as can the hours. Please visit the website below for updated information.

Oh yes, you can buy your tickets on the bus or at the information center at Plaça de Catalunya. They have some way of reserving/buying your tickets online but I would just go to either Plaça de Catalunya or get it on the bus. You have to pay in cash on the bus though.

    By Plane: El Prat airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • El Prat is the international airport of BCN.

Arriving: It is rather close to the city, there are fequent buses (Aerobus) to town (Pl.Catalunya), that take about 40 minutes.

Departing: If you arrive on time, there are a lot of shops and cafes here to spend your time. You could even leave your souvenir shopping for the last minutes, as here you will find some really attractive shops.

    Taxi Cabs: Taxis
  • Tip Rating:
  • In BCN taxis are painted in a distinctive black and yellow colors.
I never used one by day, as the transport system here is excellent.
But to return at night U might have to use them. If you are around the Gothic Quarter or Las Ramblas, the best place to take a taxi is the Placa de Catalunya. You will see long queues there for taxis at 2-3 am. Expect to wait 15-20 minutes for yours!
