By Train: I took the train from Geneva,...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I took the train from Geneva, but you can also drive or fly there
The city is very big, so consider public transport: bus or metro will do. With hired car, you risk higher costs and traffic jams

By Train: Not so hard to get there....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not so hard to get there. Trains planes and automobiles, all the same. BUT, if you want to leave by train, bookings are needed all year around on weekends and any of their hundreds of holidays.
NOTE: Trains are cheap so don't waste your Eurail days.
    OR
Ezyjet have flights around Europe pretty dam cheap. They leave from Madrid and I think Barcelona. Eg. Back to London cost me only 85,000 pts and i booked the day before.
    look it up... www.ezyjet.com
Walk or train. The metro is the cleanist I've seen and the chairs even have back support. Woo hoo They leave every 5 minutes at least and seemed to be on time. Hmm New concept hey.

By Train: plane definately!! By bus it...
  • Tip Rating:
  • plane definately!! By bus it apparently takes 20 hours or so..lots of wasted holiday time
When catching trains, there are two types of carriages available. 1st & 2nd class. When you buy a normal ticket, it's for 2nd class, so if you sit in a 1st class carriage, you will be asked to pay extra $$. The 1st class carriages have tables & heaps of leg room. So, when you think you have finally found a cool train with great value for $.....move carriages!!!

By Train: Getting your bicycle onto public transport
Despite Barcelona being a bicycle-friendly city, it's very difficult to find transport that will let you take a bike onboard.
When I decided to leave Barcelona I wanted to get to France, preferably up to Avignon, but none of the coach services would let my bike onboard, and the train station, França, was the same.
In the end, the only place that would allow bicycles was the train station, Sants, though that only went as far north as the French border, not into France itself.
Still, it seems to be your only safe bet for getting your bicycle onboard public transport, but if there is an alternative option I'd love to know!

    By Train: The Metro
We were a bit daunted at first, but once you get the hang of it, the Metro is a really cheap and extremely easy way to get around Barcelona, we used it nearly every day, ad it made the trip much more pleasant.

By Train: The Metro, FGC and Renfe
Remember that both the Metro and FGC are local area transportation. Renfe is the Spanish National Rail Service. All three are very easy to navigate, timely and inexpensive....no need for a car in or around Barcelona. The 10-trip passes purchased via the ticket machines are good for the Metro, FGC and city buses. Each trip is time stamped on your pass as you enter the 'stations' and is valid for a given period of travel time for the number of zones you are travelling. If you get off the Metro and jump on a bus, just put your ticket into the machine on the bus and it checks the time of your trip and either re-stamps (a new trip), or just kicks back your card. Don't be scared of the machines. All three services run to/from both Placa de Catalunya and Barcelona Sants.
