theft.... niver carry a handbag on the streets, keep your wallet in your pocket or whichever is close to you. The busier the pavement, the surer you can be that someone will be trying to steal someone else's wallet.
My aunt who used to live in Barcelona also told me that you cannot safely leave a car with a radio on any Spanish street, not even for a quarter of an hour in broad daylight in a good area. But to me like any other countries, try to be careful when visiting places which you are unfamiliar with..
Be careful with your bags, especially when you're travelling alone, and you're female! There are plenty of pickpockets around. In fact, my girlfriend was mugged when she was up at Montjuic alone! Always be alert.
Beware of Pickpockets in the subways!! They like to work in pairs on the escalators going up out of the subway or by the entrances onto the subway train itself. They will pretend to drop something on the floor while a group is moving out of or onto the subway. While the crowd stops abruptly this is when they strike. Whenever you are in any public place in Barcelona, if there is a commotion and people stop or bump into you. GRAB YOUR VALUABLES!!!
Be careful with your wallet !!!
... the scenario for me has been the underground station (the one close to the zoo); as soon as I got out of the train (well, of course I realized this later :-) one guy seated on the bench started following me. I went for the escalator on the path to get out from the station; on top of the escalator a guy in front of me went for pickin' up something from the ground while the escalator was stiil running. This has created a lot of confusion with many people pushing on me (and on my back :-) ... as soon as the guy in front of me 'achieved' its goal he left the escalator and I soon realized my wallet was gone.
But now the good news !!! A policeman was one of the people behind me on the escalator, of course he was not police-suited, he was on holiday: well, he ran behind the thief and made him to abandon my wallet: no longer money in it but all cards were still there. So THANX to that policeman !!!!!!!!!!!!
Traffic is crazy and drivers are insane. You have to follow pedestrian signs, and even then cars may still drive (quickly) through red traffic lights - often!
Well I guess this is a contradiction of the theory. My question here is, well, which way do you run?, options are 50/50....
think twice at least.
Wen you walk on the Ramblas you always must take care for the pick pockets. So be very careful to hold your money in a safe place!
The heat isn't quite as oppressive as Madrid. Nevertheless, mind the sun and have bottled water convenient. Also, mind your belongings. Pickpockets are a problem in any city.
Is wonderful take a walk by the Ramblas, but you have to take care for your handbag and photo camera, unfortunately some people don´t go to Ramblas to walk.
Pollution, pollution, pollution. Even thought, it's gotten much better, there is still a lot of pollution.
Please LOOK EVERYWHERE before crossing the street, moppeds may get you if you're not aware!
Like any city, be careful where and when you go places. Go with friends if possible. The worst time is late at night, like any city. Just use some common sense and you will be ok.
