Beware of Pickpockets! I have never been robbed in 25 years of life in America, but have come to Barcelona and almost been taken twice. Shady looking Arab men come out of nowhere in groups and try to distract you and litterally pick your pockets. My husband was stepping into a metro and just as the doors were closing, two men "tripped" in front of him. As my husband was trying to get his bounds and get out of their way, two other Arab men tried to steal his plam piolot out of his velcroed cargo pant pocket. They are crafty and very quick. If the doors would have closed before my husband realized what was going on, they would have gotten away. Beware!!!
It's a pity the authorities don't take charge more efficiently of this matter. Many tourists are robbed weekly by pickpockets, generally arabs who act in groups of a few people. They usually rob people at crowded locations, mainly Les Rambles.
They use to get near the crowds, e.g. where people gather to watch a mime artist. Then, while some of them are watching over police guards or people noticing of their plans, another one pulls out a valuable object very carefully from a pocket usually at one's butt.
Be very careful of them, don't bring valuable objects at a back pocket. Watch out!
Moreover it's unwise to roam Les Rambles at very early morning with visible valuable objects such as cameras, or video cameras. At these hours robbers dare to attack tourists.
The visit in Barcelona surely will be very pleasant and without frights by having in account these advises.
Barcelona is pick-pocket city. Four different people told me of their experiences within two days. I watched the theives at work from the upper story of McDonalds along the Ramblas! Keep your wits about you. If you have to go - get in and out quick!
Everyone I hear talking about Barcelona bugles on about pickpockets . I've been there numerous times , I've been in some pretty rough local boozers and never once had any kind of hassle of that sort , or any at all in fact . I think the best tip I could say was try as a tourist to look local , I speak Spanish which helps , but I dont pose around with wallet showing etc. , if you do your asking to get fleeced in any city in the world .
PICPOCKETS. The subway is full of them. I was ready for them and knew their game but they got me anyway. Please guard everything and if some one falls in front of you on the escalator on the way out of the subway grab your valuables and kick them as hard as you can because someone in back of you is picking your pocket.
Watch out for pickpockets working in pairs on the underground - one on and one off a train.
If you find you have been sprayed with something which looks but does not smell like !!!, be VERY, VERY WARY about accepting help. I was lucky but I have heard horrible stories of apparently respectable people leading the unwary into situations where they can be mugged and robbed.
(Photo - a bit of the Parc Guell) Barcelona is still great as long as you are a bit careful.
There are skilled pickpockets and purse snatchers in this town. They won't stick a gun in your face or club you over the head, but they will use quickness and stealth to rob you if you are careless. My sister's son ran after and caught a kid who snatched her purse; my daughter found a guy's hand rummaging in her bag as we crossed a crosswalk(and he was eating a sandwich with the other hand!) He didn't get anything. Wear your money under your clothes!
Beware of the pickpockets of La Ramblas and the gypsies. As long as you are sensible there is not problem but some people are so thick. One American tourist, while waiting for a bus was approached by a Gypsy woman who gave him a flower and then asked for money. Once he figured out what she wanted he offered her some change which she wouldn't take, then she proceeded to fish around in his pockets and pull out his wallet. Anyone this stupid deserves what they get.
One person in our travel party of 3 was pick pocketed 3 times. Twice on public transit and once inside the back room - 25ft from any door - of a nicer restaurant.
I read many warnings about pickpockets. As always these kind of warnings are rather exaggerated in my experience. With common precautions against pickpockets you'd be just fine.
The pickpockets are quite serious in Barcelona, my purse was stolen while I was visting in Castle Montjuic, it wasted me much time for reporting to the police, just mind your belongings anytime.
