DALI’S HOUSE IN PORTLLIGAT
Dali and Gala bought a small fisherman’s house and as they were gettimg more money they bought the ones next to it until they made this big house. It has turned into a museum and if you want to visit it you have to schedule. From the house you can see some landscaes which inspired Dali and some of them can be seen in his works.
Take an inflatable dingy out on the water &explore
One of the best things I did while staying in Cadaques was rent a boat. We waited days for the wind to calm before we were allowed to take one out, and not knowing what to expect, thought at least it would look like a Florida style rental- medium sized, with a ladder to crawl up to the steering wheel.
But, when the time came, we waded out through the waves and jumped into a small dingy...almost like a lifeboat. It had a small motor on the back that was also the steering unit and seated 4 of us comfortably.
We headed out and followed the coast until we were so far out and on the opposite side of the mountains that we decided to pull over. While boating towards a small island close to land, I noticed a strange shape perched on a large rock in the sea at least a mile from land. As we came closer, we realized it was indeed a naked man who had swam out and was enjoying a breaather. He jumped back in and swam to shore soon after I snapped some secret shots of him. We then headed into a secluded alley of rocks and deep blue water, tied up the liferaft and jmped into.
It felt as if no one existed. The world was empty. No sounds but the water and our laughter. It was incredihble...and the water ofcourse, crystal clear.
Ride back was a bit bumpy on the dingy as a storm picked up- but worth it even if we sunk the dingy and had to swim to shore.
1 kilometre away from Cadaqués there is Portlligat wich is a small cove with some fishermen’s houses. You have to go walking cause there is no bus or other transport to reach this place but you can’t miss it. Here there is Dali’s house.
From Roses to Cadaques
Went way out of the way to get to Cadaques at the urging of a friend. It was o.k. but much smaller and slower paced than I had imagined. Reminded me of Avalon or the Istmus on Catalina Island in California. Got lost and happened upon Dali's home (over a hill and down a ravene). Surprisingly , they have a very good likeness of the Statue of Liberty as you enter the town (last thing I expected to see there). The terraced hillsides surrounding the steep entry road from Roses give evidence of a vaste olive growing economy from the distant past (now abandoned). If you want a sleepy seaside village , this is it (at least in the off-season). Roses had bigger beaches and an ancient Roman citadel to visit.

Sa Conca. A not so crowded small beach.
If you are in Cadaqués during summer and would like to splash in the water and sunbath for a while there is a quite a small peeble beach ( all the beaches in Cadaques have peebles ) named Sa Conca.
Once you are in the centre of Cadaques at the seafront just go all the way to the left around the coast. ( You can either go walking or by car, it´s not more than 1km. anyway )You´ll be passing beside the "Jane beach"
( which is also small but probably quite crowded during summer )
You´ll find Hotel Jane Petit in front of you, follow the path behind it and keep walking it. If you find a juction always take the path on the left and you will finally end in Sa Conca beach.
The Rocamar hotel is placed there. ( A 3 star hotel ) but even so it is still one of the most quiet beaches of Cadaques during summertime.
It is not as close as the other beaches but it´s certainly worth the walk.
There is a Scuba Diving School in there as well.
Whatever choice you make enjoy this little jewel of the Mediterranean that Cadaques is.
My favorite place of the country where I was born, Catalunya.
