Visit the MNAC in Barcelona

by Elisabcn

If I had to choose to visit 1-2 museums during a short stay in Barcelona, the MNAC would be for sure one of them. The MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) has the most important collection of Catalan Art in the world (this should be obvious but . . .), since the Greek colonies until our days. Sculptures, paintings, designs . . . from local anonymous artists but also from well known artists like Picasso, Miro’ or Ramon Casas. My favourite part of the museum is all the rooms related to Romanesque Art being the XIIth century paintings from the Churches of Boí Taüll (Catalan Pirineus) the highlight. But the espace related to the Modern Art is very interesting as well, with works of Ramon Casas, Isidre Nonell or Joaquim Sunyer. The MNAC also organises from time to time interesting temporary exhibitions. I remember especially the one dedicated to the Italian painter Caravaggio, some years...

Catalunya - History continued

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

In 1640-1652 there was the Catalunian war. Catalunian estates rise against Phillip IV and at support of Lui XIII try to achieve independence. However the war was lost. Phillip V has forbidden catalunian language and has partially destroyed Barcelona. It has served as punishment for support of the Austrian branch of Gabsburgs. In 1808-1814 Napoleon devastates Barcelona.

Catalunya - History

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

In 1137 occurs the union of Catalunia and Aragon. The state turns to sea power and wins numerous islands and territories on Mediterranean sea (including Sardinia, Naples, the grounds of Southern France down to Rhone). There was the first in Europe parliament - Council of the Hundred. In 1469 as a result of wedding Ferdinand Aragon and Isabella Castilian Catalonia has turned to one of provinces of Spain.

Catalonia's borders are not the same as Spain's

by dlandt

Catalonia is usually considered a province or region of Spain, but that doesn't quite reflect the reality. Catalan the language, which is closely associated with being Catalan the ethnic group, or Catalonia the nation, doesn't quite conform to its corner of Northeastern Spain. First, it is spoken on the Balearic Islands, and second it is spoken across the border in France, as well as in the tiny nation of Andorra. This picture is from Andorra, showing a sign written in Catalan, illustrating the linguistic prerogative of that nation. Crossing into France, you still saw signs of Catalan culture or influence, though it was stronger on the Spanish side of the border.

Roadside restaurants

by dlandt

Rural Catalonia has a fair decent number of restaurants at various crossroads. This one lingers by the C-55 south of Seu de Urguell. They seem to consistently offer good, local fare for a reasonable amount of money, and have well stocked kitchens and bars. A simple salad, dressed with some of the best oil and vinegar I ever had.

Lleida

by Peret

The city of Lleida is The capital of the lands called "Terra ferma". This is "Steady Land" in catalan. Or also "Terra de ponent", because is the part of Catalonia placed most in the east. It is also my birth land. And i have family there. Usually was a peasant land, famous for its fruits. And still it is, but now, the town council have also taken care to old atractives, and have built news. The city is two hours far from Barcelona, by highway or train, so you can do a day trip. Come to see see the catalonia that is not in the coast. Its history starts with the iberians and continue with romans, people from Cartago, arabian, juish, christians. Now live hier catalans, and a lot of people who came of Africa for economical reasons.La ciutat de Lleida és la capital de l'anomenada terra ferma, o també de "les terres de ponent", ja que és la part més occidental de Catalunya. També és la meva...

Ascó

You can divided Catalonia in "Catalunya Nova" and "Catalunya Vella". The last is more or less barcelona and Girona. The first, South of Lleida and Tarragona. The "Catalunya nova" was occuped a coupple of centurys for arabian people. When christians occupped this land, arabians, christians and juish lived in peace a lot of years. The king "Fernando el católico" did the stupidity to expulse the arabians, as this land didn't be their house. Now, in the "Catalunya Vella" still remains a lot of old arabian architecture.

Catalunya

by tessy

Catalunya is in the north east of Spain: there are 4 big counties: Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, Lleida. We visited this time especially the region round Girona and a short visit to Barcelona. What I like about Catalunya is it's diversity: The beautiful places like Barcelona and Girona, the smaller places like Besalu, Pals, Tossa, ... the mountains, the volcans, the art: the houses, the castles, the monasteries, the beaches, the Costa Brava (wild coast) the cliffs, the food, .... there is so much! Just go there and visit!

Catalan: our language.

by crazyguitar

Catalan is the country’s own language and it has historically been dominant in Catalonia and therefore the one mostly used in communicative situations. However, because of political repression against Catalan during long periods of its history, the process of economic development of Catalonia and the fact that the country has received immigrants from many parts of Spain and around the world, Catalan coexists nowadays with Spanish and with other languages such as English, French, German, Arabic, Berber, Tagalog, etc. 75,30 % of Catalonia’s population speaks Catalan and 95,00 % understands it. Almost everybody knows Spanish and a lot of people, mainly the young, can express themselves in English. The Catalan language is among the ten most spoken and written languages in the European Union; the number of Catalan speakers is higher than such languages as Danish or Finnish. In the European...
