Besalu is an extraordinary medieval village very well kept. Outstanding are the church of Sant Vincent of the X century, the Sant Pere monastery of the X century and the Romanesque bridge over the Fluvia river.
Favorite thing: I made the longest itinerary, 10km. It goes throught the Fageda, St. Margarida Volcano and the Croscant Volcano. It takes about 3hrs, taking a break in St. Margarida for 30min. EASY. Check the map.
Favorite thing: The Croscat is a Strombolian type volcano and its cone, which is 160m high, is the biggest in the Iberian Peninsula. It is also, so it would seem, the youngest of them all. For years it suffered the extraction of volcanic material from its flank, which left an impressive cut. Check the picture.
Favorite thing: The "Fageda" is an exceptional beech tree forest because it grows on flat ground at a low altitude (550m). In fact, it grows over a large lava cast that erupted from the Croscat volcano which offers an uneven relief, with numerous very characteristic prominences that can reach up to more than 20 m in height and which are known locally as tossols.
