Before we decided where we wanted to go during the summer of 2012, of course we did some research on Google about Pals and the entire area. One of the things that intrigued me immediately was the fact that there was a Gothic Quarter in the city centre of this old medieval village. The restoration of the medieval town centre, after the enormous damage resulting from the Spanish civil war, lasted over 3 decades and was substantially completed by 1980. Today Pals is heralded as an excellent example of city restoration. Sometimes critical contemporaries have thought that the restoration was "too perfect." But, we wholeheartedly recommend a visit. The natural centre of this Gothic Quarter is the Plaça major.

Other places of interest right at the Plaça Major will be found if you just look up to the beautiful facades of the surrounding buildings. Maybe it is a good tip to have a cold refreshment at one of the terraces, sit on a comfortable chair, just look around and enjoy the vibrance of this beautiful spot.

    Address: Plaça Major, Pals.

Directions: Once you're in the village of Pals you immediately will notice the church Esglesia de Sant Pere. Just walk upwards and you eventually will end up at the Plaça Major.

Without a doubt is the Plaça Major the busy centre of the town and a true tourist trap. But is this a good reason to avoid it and not visit it? No, not at all. You can also put this main square in the tip section "Must see"! And I can also tell you why :)

All around this square you will see magnificent medieval buildings. For example the Casa de Vile, we read that this particular building was first designed in the 12th century and was intended to create a safe place of comfort for the residents of Pals, even whilst under attack. In recent times the beautiful building has become home to a hotel. And to be honest, the location is just great! Another thing you will notice immediately is the ancient archway which will take you further into the medieval village. Why will you notice it immediately? Well that’s quite easy … I guess just about everybody takes a picture with his beloved underneath it :). The Plaça Major also houses a variety of restaurants and trinket shops selling everything from ceramics to jewelry.

Plaça Major – The main square.

Pals is a medieval village which was once neglected but a local doctor set too in leading the restoration and it is now very attractive. This section is Gothic in origin as can be deduced from the pointy arches of some of the windows and doorways. The main road into the village winds upwards towards the large tower which remains of the castle that once stood here. From here you can see the impressive ramparts and have views out over the surrounding countryside. Parts of the ramparts are planted up with impressive large cacti.

Once hiking your way around in the Gothic Quarter of Pals you can’t miss out on the main square (called Plaça Major) on which all these beautiful historical buildings are situated. Plaça Major is the natural centre of the city of Pals: a stage for various minor and major events, a reference point, a meeting place and the starting point or destination for walkers who want to discover the city. Historically speaking, the square began to operate in a shape and size similar to what we see today in the early years of the 13th century.
