    Monument of Roger de Lauria

Statue of Roger de Lauria is situated at the end of the Rambla Nova, it is probably the most popular monument of Tarragona and the best decoration of so-called Mediterranean Balcony. That bronze statue was founded in 1886 by Felix Ferrer. The monument was opened in 1889. Unfortunately sculptor was in blissful ignorance about the fashion, arms and armors of XIII and first decade of XIV centuries, that’s why Roger de Lauria is looking like the hero from the “Star wars” although he was one of most famous admirals of XIII century. He was born in 1245 in Sicily in prominent Ghibelline family. When Ghibelline party lost their war in Southern Italy Roger became a subject of the King of Aragon and Sicily. Being the Aragonese Admiral he won a lot of naval battles and actually saved the independence of Kingdom of Aragon from the claims of French King. He died in 1305 in Valencia.

The Balcony of the Mediterranean is a cliff twenty three meters high, according to other sources its height is forty meters, which is situated at the end of the Rambla Nova and on over the coast of Mediterranean Sea. It is surrounded by an old wrought iron railing designed by Joan Miquel Guinart.
According to local legends that this place acquired name of Mediterranean balcony when King Charles I of Spain who was the same time the Holy Roman Emperor Charles said “This is the best balcony over the sea that exists in my state”. Locals say it took place during his visit to city of Tarragona in 1542.
This monument offers a beautiful panoramic view over the Mediterranean Sea. Below the balcony you will find the Miracle Beach.

Getting out of the train station we had 2 options to reach the Old Town, the first one was to take the ring road along the coast and the second one to go up the stairs (pic 1). We did the second one and ended up at Balco del Mediterrani (Mediterranean balcony). It’s a long pedestrian area at the bottom of Rambla Nova where people go to have nice view from a spot that overlooks the sea, you can see part of the beach from here. It’s a balcony on the rock about 40 meters above the sea level that was created in 1855.

There are some simple fountains, a sun clock, many palm trees and benches to relax for a while. There was also a local musician playing a string organ and selling his cds. Not much to do here after taking some photographs so we decided ton walk towards the roman amphitheatre before we move further into the Old Town.

The place, that helps to overlook a sea, called Mediterranean balcony. It is the end of important and famous i Tarragona Rambla Nova avenue. Balcony is on natural 40 meters sea bank.

The Rambla Nova and a balcony were designed in 1855 by Josep Criville. The avenue is a symbolic border between new and old town of Tarragona. Here you could find tourism information office for some guides and souvenirs.

In the end of Rambla Nova is an open area called Balcó del Mediterrani. From here you have a great view over the sea, beach, port and amphitheatre. There is a decorative railing made of iron along the balcony. After arriving to Tarragona I walked from the train station up the stairs to the Mediterranean Balcony. You can easily see the way if you turn right as you leave the train station.

This place where we are right now is called Mediterranean’s balcony. From here there is a great view of the sea and of the beach. Romans took advantage of the location of this city to trade with the metropolis. Many ships carried the excellent wines of this colony to Rome.
This look out is located at the end of the Rambla Nova (the city’s main avenue),
