Modernist Architecture in Terrassa

by Elisabcn

When talking about Terrassa words like “industrial” and “textile” suddenly come to our mind. And maybe that does not sound very appealing to visit the city. But the factory, due to its functional character without aesthetical problems, has always been in the history of the architecture a good space to experiment new techniques. During Modernisme, by the end of XIX century-beginning of XX century, architects will try to apply a good design and nice finishes also in these buildings. And using only few elements (Catalan roof vaults, open brickwork walls with decorative items in the same material) they built beautiful buildings, always industrial buildings but buildings that will mark the history of the industrial Catalan architecture and the city itself. Starting from the City Council Square, there is an interesting architectural walk through different public and industrial buildings in...

Sant Cugat's Cloister

by Elisabcn

The cloister dates from XI-XIIth centuries. Arcades on pairs of columns rise from a plinth and to ensure stability, robust masonry piers were built in the corners and at other points in the galleries. There are 144 capitals, all different, in Romanesque style. The carving of the capitals, which displays a wide range of decorative and iconographic details, is of a great quality and makes this cloister one of the most important examples of Romanesque Architecture. The carvings in the cloister were made by sculptors, that is, specialised masons. Different stone is used in various parts of the structure. Thus, the shafts of the columns are of stone from Girona while the voussoirs of the arches, the capitals and the bases are of stone from Montjuich, more suitable for carving. A rare detail to show you here is the fact that the author, Arnau Cadell, signed his work. He also carved his...

Sant Cugat's Monastery

by Elisabcn

The Benedictine monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès was built between the IXth and XIVth centuries. It was the French king Charlemagne, very devoted to Saint Cugat, who founded there the Benedictine community in 785, giving them some lands and properties. That monastery became one of the main monasteries in Catalunya. Centre of the religious life, it also took part in the political life of the country. During the Middle Ages it gathered together lots of lands and properties in the County of Barcelona and in the New Catalonia, developing an important architectural ensemble. Nowadays we still can see the church, the cloister, the abbot’s palace and the walls around. Monks abandoned the monastic life in 1835.Unlike other monasteries, which usually are retired from the village, Sant Cugat Monastery is nowadays in the middle of Sant Cugat del Vallès (picture 2). This is because the city has...

Pirineus: camí vell Queralbs-Núria

by Elisabcn

El “camí vell” (old trail) from Queralbs to Núria is a trail used since ancient times to go on pilgrimage to Núria Valley. Nowadays it is one of the most beautiful hiking to do along the Catalan Pirineus. It starts at the village of Queralbs, near the Freser river and arrives to the sanctuary of Núria. It is 8.500km long with a height difference of 950m.Queralbs is a charming town at 1236m. Wander around the village before starting the hiking, the stone architecture is very beautiful. Queralbs is also the place where Jordi Pujol, the previous president of Catalonia, always spends his vacations. Then the trail is well indicated, always follow the sign “Camí a Núria”. It takes in theory 3 hours to climb up and 2 hours and a half to go down but I am not super fit and needed less time to do it. It is a pleasant walk because, apart from the beautiful landscapes, you are always walking...

Montseny: Santa Fe and Sant Marçal

by Elisabcn

This is a nice excursion from Barcelona (45min by car). It is the classical route to climb the Matagalls which is usually one of the first peaks that any hiker in Catalunya does. But today we will only visit Santa Fe and Sant Marçal, just a little taste of the Montseny, and we will leave el Matagalls for another day ;-). We pass through Santa Fe del Montseny (road Bv-5114) where we can see from the road three ancient sequoias (you need three people to hold them!). Leave your car here, there is an information centre about the Park. Take the path and explore the beech forest where after some minutes walking you will find a nice pond, perfect for maybe a picnic later. Going back to the road and only few kilometres forward we arrive to La Taula dels Tres Bisbes (the three bishops’ table). It is called like this because in this point match up three Diocese Seats: Barcelona, Vic and Girona and...

Tavertet

by Elisabcn

Tavertet is a beautiful town in the province of Barcelona. In the middle of a spectacular environment (woods, natural region of Collsacabra, the Guilleries massif . . .) this rocky town of only 146 inhabitants has a particular charm. Tavertet is a nice stop (and a good viewpoint!) for your trekkings to Sau or Bala Valley. Don’t miss its little Sant Cristofor’s church

Tarragona

by Elisabcn

Tarraco (its Roman name) was founded as a military base of the roman legions in Hispania. By the year 45 bC, when Tarraco was already the capital of Hispania Citerior, Julius Caesar gave it the status of roman colonia with the name of Colonia Iulia Urbs Triumphalis Tarraconensis. In Roman times, Tarraco was more important than its neighbor Barcino (Barcelona). Romans stayed in Tarraco for 6 centuries and left in the city very important evidences like the walls, the forum, the circus, the theatre . . . In 2000 Unesco declared all this archaeological ensemble part of its World Heritage listApart from the Roman remains in Tarragona you will find some interesting things from medieval period (like the Cathedral, chapels, houses of the nobility) and modern times (the Town Hall, some fortifications) too. If you are staying in Barcelona, Tarragona is the perfect destination for a one day...

La Ruta del Cister: ora et labora!

by Elisabcn

The Order of Cistercians is a Roman Catholic religious order of enclosed monks. They follow the Rule of Saint Benedict. The emphasis of Cistercian life is on manual labor and self-sufficiency, ( ora et labora ) and many abbeys have traditionally supported themselves through activities such as agriculture and brewing ales. La Ruta del Cister is a cultural route that takes you to the main monasteries of the Cistercian order in Catalunya. The highlights of this route are the Monastir of Poblet (in Conca de Barberà and the only one that still has its former function), Santes Creus (in Alt Camp), and the female monastery of Vallbona de les Monges (in l’Urgell). Each monastery offers you a guided visit (in many languages) that explains you about the monastery’s architecture, its history and monks’ everyday life. There are also informative panels and maps talking about Cister in Catalunya...

Girona

by Elisabcn

Girona is a very beautiful city situated in the north of Catalunya and it is the capital of the province of Girona. Far from the crows, it has kept its traditions and original charm. Immerse yourself in el Barri Vell (old quarter), the area enclosed inside the medieval walls. The cathedral of Girona (XII-XVIII) dedicated to Saint Mary, even if it does not look very impressive from outside, has the longest gothic nave in the world (22,98m). Also this cathedral had a famous bell-ringer, his name was Josafat, and his story is not very different from Notre Dame’s Quasimodo. And of course there is the call jueu (Jewish quarter) to explore, one of the best kept in all Europe, with old stone houses and narrow and labyrinth streets that make you travel to the past. Visit the old synagogue, the ritual baths (wrongly called Arab baths) and the Jewish museum to learn the importance of this...
