Tossa old town lies behind the old town walls which have lots of little paths and walkways to explore.
Hidden amongst these are little cottage-style houses and a few restaurants.

Tossa de Mar was first brought to the outside world in the fifties when it was picked as the set location for the famous film, Pandora & the Flying Dutchman, starring the Hollywood stars James Mason & Ava Gardner

'Pandora' by Ci Abell

We found a statue of a beautiful woman in evening dress overlooking the town with no plaque. I have since done some research and found out it is named 'Pandora'and was put there in 2008.
In the 1950's Hollywood came to Tossa! James Mason and Ava Gardner filmed "Pandora and the Flying Dutchman", making the village a tourist attraction. It was then she began her love affair with Spain (and matadors)...moving to Madrid and staying for 8 years.

The town was once reliant on fishing and even now many residents take their small boats out in the morning and evening. It's fascinating to watch (mostly old men) preparing the boat, getting it to the water's edge and then spot their lights bobbing offshore at dusk . Once we went for a 7 a.m swim, the sea was like a millpond and we watched as they labouriously detangled the catch.

Scarey??

My partner suffers from vertigo so I didn't get to walk along the wall and enjoy the stunning view for as long as I would have liked!! To be fair the railings are low and you would have to watch little ones like a hawk. What I liked most is the opportunity to peek onto peoples sun terraces and catch glimpses of the restored interiors ;-) One day.....

PHOTOS FROM OUR STAY IN TOSSA........

We had to park our Citroen C3 about 10 blocks away from the hotel in a newer residential section. Tossa has maintained its Spanish identity by allowing no Hiltons, no MacDonald’s, no corporate chain operations in the inner town. We loved roaming through the small shops and eating/drinking in the outdoor sidewalk cafes. Orange and black dominate clothing colors for the locals.

We walked around the old walled ruins of the original city, climbed on cliff paths overlooking the beaches, and swam at the topless beach. Prices were reasonable, and the local wines were a pleasure to drink. We found having a ½ litre with lunch and full litre with dinner just perfect for us. There are lots of artesian pizza places, tapas cafes and gift shops. Why are the 10-inch pizzas throughout Europe so much better than any pizza in the States? After dinner, we learned to drink a ‘cortal’ – espresso with cream. We ate some wonderful tapas for light breaks, such as anchovies over green tomatoes. We were served a bowl of olives at one place and Joan, being a lover of olives, stated these were probably the best olives she has ever tasted.

We didn’t encounter any Americans in Tossa, which added to uniqueness. We were asked if we were Germans or New Zealanders.

Tossa is very quite on may. The pop season is from June. The moon rised up from the quite sea is beatiful. And the sun rising is just in front of this beach. If u take a hotel beside the sands, u can even enjoy the sun rising on ur bed.
