They are very helpful and gave me a lot of information about the place. They even suggested me to try the special dish from Valle de Arán, called Olla Aranesa, that I immediately ordered in a restaurant nearby.
They speak Spanish, French and English, apart from Aranese local language.

Artiga de Lin is a fantastic place, and more when the path is solitary, as it happened to us when we did the excursion in December. If there isn't too much snow probably is the nicest time of the year to walk to Artiga de Lin, as the snow always makes all more well-loved.

To get information about where to start this outing, go to the tourism office, in the center of Vielha. The place to start to climb is not very far away.

If you came from Vielha to the Aneu valleys, you will find fantastic views on the way. The higher point is Port de la Bonaigua, and near here there's a charming pub-restaurant to stop, rest, and enjoy the landscape.

At first we thought this restaurant was only Tapas, but when we walked in we were shown to the main dining area at the back, through another door, and it was lovely!! (see pics) with full linens and some nice artwork, low lighting, etc. The owner/manager was very personable.

On the business card, the cuisine is 'Catalano-Aranesa'; and everything we ordered was excellent, altho don't ask me to recall it specifically.
Also, our wines of the house were both good and reasonably priced.

That does not means that avalanches are always awaiting for you in the mountain. But they aren't uncommon in the higher places. As risks are announced in the places where excursions starts, read the cautinary words and follow the recommendations.

In the photo there's an example of avalanche. We had to croos it to continue to the top.

Equipment: Take water with you when you start an excursion, although in vall d'Aran there is a lot in the paths. So, if you run out of water in the middle of the day, don't worry, sure you will find it quickly.

Favorite thing: There are nice little stone houses near the mountain paths. And if you are a hill-goer you will find useful shelters too.

Favorite thing: In that page, I'm not writing exactly about Viella, I write about La Vall d'Aran, the area that has Viella for its capital.

La Vall d'Aran is placed in the north west of Catalonia (Spain), just in the Pirinean Mountains touching France.

Fondest memory: This last summer (2002), was the 3rd that my family and another one (friends), went to La Vall d'Aran, for me was the 2nd.

We stay in a small housed lost in a valey far from the civilization :-)
5km far away from a village, but we took 20 minutes to get there, because the small "road" isn't very good.

What I like the most of that place is its magical views... high mountains surrounding a beautiful valley with small villages of friendly people... under a summer blue skie.
