Bwana's travelling restaurant: A picnic in our car

  • Cabo de San Antonio view over Jávea - Alicante
Cabo de San Antonio view over
    Jávea

It was about 11:30 AM when we finished exploring the grounds surrounding the lighthouse at Cabo de San Antonio and hunger pangs were starting to set in. Fortunately, the nature park connecting the nearby peak of Montgó with the Cabo features a very nice car park area on the edge of a sharp 160 meter drop-off, providing both excellent views and a place for a picnic in our car.

Speaking of Montgó (as seen in the 3rd photo), Wikipedia says it "is a mountain in eastern Spain which rises to 753 meters (2470 feet) at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the last spur on the Betics Mountain Range and is located in the Marina Alta region in the north of the province of Alicante between the towns of Denia and Jávea. The mountain rises dramatically from the valley floors surrounding it and dominates the skyline for miles around. Its craggy cliffs are home to some of the most unique flora and fauna in Spain. The mountain is renowned for its rock formations, cliffs, caves and natural harbours."

As is usual with us on many of our road trips, we had stocked up with a few basic groceries from a supermarket to bring with us in our car so we could stop and prepare sandwiches when and wherever the urge hits us. In this case, we had whole wheat bread, tomatoes, Gouda cheese and mayonnaise for sandwiches and a small cup of wine each as we enjoyed the wide sweeping vista spread out before us. Only one other car stopped briefly during our stay there, so it was a very peaceful spot.

There are so many nice restaurants in
Alicante and along the Costa Blanca. We like the CASA JULIO restaurant so much, because you get excellent spanish sea food from Paella to Gambas, sitting directly with you feet in the sand.
Perfect for lunch and a wonderful experience for a dinner at night.

Gambas is our favourite dish as you can imagine looking at the picture.

No more words needed I guess.

LA LLOTJA: LOVELY RESTAURANT IN DENIA
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • As it was nearing time to eat, we started looking for a restaurant. Our last town during our trip along the peninsula was Denia. We found a lovely restaurant which featured a Menu for 8 Euros.
It was almost 4 o'clock and nearing closing time, but the Senora said we could come in. For appetizer Hans had the mixed meat plate - a nice selection of thinly sliced meats and I had the Salad which was awesome, with olives, tuna, lettuce and tomatoes. We shared the two dishes. For the entree, I had escalope, which was absolutely delicious and Hans had a plate of fish and squid, which he enjoyed.. The price also included Pan ( Bread with a delicious garlic butter ) and Bebida ( drink ). The manager Kiko was delightful and very entertaining. All in all a pleasant dining experience.

    LA PALLOZA: RESTAURANT CAFETERIA
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Since LA PALLOZA was conveniently localted right next door to Mont Royal, we decided to have a bite to eat there. We had Albondigas Pieza or Meatballs, Patatas Fritas or Fried Potatoes and Racion Pan (basket of bread & butter) Nothing fancy but tasted good and filled our tummies.
We also had breakfast there twice as it was included in our hotel rate. It consisted of coffee, fresh orange juice and two pieces of toasy with butter and jams.

    Cheaper Meals
  • Tip Rating:
  • In most spanish cafeterias (small local restaurants) they serve small appetizers or snacks. If you go up to the counter to order them and eat them at the counter/bar then the price is a lot cheaper. Once you sit down at a table and service is required the price of the food jumps.

A great quick and cheap meal is the tortilla espanol. It is an omlette with potatoes served on fresh bread. It is sooooooo good.
Some places serve it with some sort of tomato sauce (which is even better) It is really cheap (less than 3 euros for a big sandwich) and it is super filling. Most local cafeterias and restaurants sell it.

El Buen Comer: National and international kitchen
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It's only a small restaurant for about 30 -40 people. The staff is very kind and helps you if your spanish isn't perfect.......

They have a big choice of seafood, national and international dishes and of course very interesting and very good wines. We enjoyed the Tapas, Gambas al Ajillo, a good piece of lamb and of course a delicous Crema Catalana for dessert.

La Casona Alicantina: Used to be... Tradicional Mediterranean Dishes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • La Casona Alicantina is located in la Calle Mayor, probably the best street to eat local dishes. Although it was conceived as a restaurant, on the area of the bar they serve tapas, wine and beer. If you plan to stay longer, you'll have to choose among fifty dishes, all of them local and only some of them vegetarian dishes. You can chose among the bar, two saloons and the terrace.

The prices of the menus are kind of abusive (from 30 to 50 euros). The quality of the ingredients partly justify such a high price (three or four starters, a heavy dish, dessert and drinks) but only if you are a tourist. Locals would never visit La Casona unless someone else's paying (like local politicians pigging out everything they have). The treatment is correct, but far from corresponding to their prices.

    Restaurant L'Indret: Veggies' Paradise

  • The restaurant front door - Alicante
    The restaurant front door

L'Indret tries to adapt their dishes to all vegetarian options and they warn you before writing down your order when they put some yoghourt or milk cream on their dishes. Their daily-changing menu includes three dishes, a drink (including wine, beer or cider) and a dessert. The options for the first dish are always carrot juice or a buffet salad that you compose by yourself out of twelve fresh ingredients. For the second and third dish there are always two options.

The atmosphere is very friendly, quiet until 14:30 h or so and at least one of the owners knows some English. The ornamentation and music is half Indian half Mexican (mmm, half-something) very alike to the food they offer.

Open from Monday to Saturday during lunchtime (from 13:00 to 16:00 h).
I always book, specially when I want to have lunch after 14:00 h on Fridays or Saturdays.

I've seen the guys ruling the restaurant buying their products in the Mercado Central many times. They bake their own bread and make the salad sauces by themselves. The variety of deserts (orange, coffee or soya pudins) and teas is also remarkable... It's a pity that L'Indret is only open during lunchtimes!
