Explanada de España
This is the main promenade in Alicante, parallel to the port. It is a favorite place to walk. In the 50’s, when there were less distractions, many couples met here, walking up and down.
It was constructed upon the old mole. 6 million tiles were used to create a wavy pattern combining red, white and blue pieces. Palm trees in four lines flank the center and lateral walks along all its length, offering the most representative image of the city.
Cheap Shopping and Ice Creams in La Explanada
La Explanada is, next to the Castle of Santa Bárbara, the most representative symbol of Alicante as palm trees that escort the passers-by along the walk are the symbol of the Costa Blanca. It's a sea promenade that spans along the sea side for more than 800 m, although they are separated by a noisy ugly road with a lot of traffic.
Its pavement is formed by six million and a half little stones grouped by colors (ivory, red and dark blue) that remind seawaves in a way. In the middle of the promenade there is an auditorium where once a week local bands play classical music. At some points there are also ice cream shops which are quite expensive, as everything you can find in La Explanada. There are also spots where cheap products are sold in an informal way, let's say: jewelry, portraits, toys, fake DVDs, sunglasses...
The promenade is worth to see but as always in Alicante, keep an eye on your stuff. It's a very popular place, it's usually packed and burglars are always ready to steal whatever they can.

The heart and soul of the city and the most famous promenade stretching around the marina with its elegant tri colored marble tiles depicting the waves of the Mediterranean that add an attraction. The four rows of palm trees offering shade even in the heat of summer is a thing to wonder and admire. Alicante must be proud of their municipal architect Jose Guardiola Picy who created this design in the 1897. The best meeting point for the locals and travelers as well. Meandering along the Explanada means discovering the essence of the city, visiting stalls selling local handicrafts, having drinks or just sit on one of the benches freely offered to everone. During the summer months or Sunday morning sitting in the shade at the music pavilion you can listen to the free concerts held or during the city's many fiestas.

Explanada de Espana
The Explanada de Espana is the walkway which runs all along the front of Alicante. We would walk this every day and it really is rather nice. You can safely walk along here with families since it's separated from the road by a line of bushes.
The city puts out free wooden chairs every day, so just sit yourself down like the locals and watch the world go by...

Explanada de Espana
Explanada de Espana - palm avenue along the coast of Mediterranean sea.
Many people consider it as the most beautiful quay in Spain.
It is paved with 6.5 million marble floor tiles creating a wavy form. The Promenade extends from the Port of Alicante to the Gran Vía and ends at the famous statue of Mark Hersch.
At the end of the promenade is a monument by the artist Banuls of the 19th century.

A walk along the Esplanada
The Esplanada de Espana is a most unusual promenade.
Bordered on both sides by palm trees, the multi-coloured marble walkway - designed in a geometric pattern - is a walk that might best be taken before a meal with alcoholic accompaniments.
Otherwise its rolling design might make you think you were at sea.
But if you keep your ahead about you it can be a a very pleasant walk along the front close to the pleasure boat harbour..
This Avenue is great to stroll under the palm trees. Many Restaurants and stalls, selling souvenirs and a lot of different things, are along this Avenue.
One thing impressed me very much, something I have never seen in another city:
The community have many chairs at everybodys disposal but they should not be removed from the Avenue. It seems to work and we saw a lot of people using the chairs, sitting and talking togehter.
A good idea I think.

Alicante Gourmet Walking Tour
Last week, my husband and me travelled to Alicante, but we wanted to do something different. So, we visited a tourist information office looking for an experience. There, we met a gastronomic route that started in one hour, at this moment we ran forward the meeting point in Explanada. There was a pleasant guide, Lucía, waiting us. We contract the tour just in this moment, only 16€ per person. I say "only" becouse we can enjoy a fantastic gastronomic tour during two hours. We could taste more than 6 tastings!!! a fresh "horchata", a marvellous wine tasting in a terrace where we could see the landscape of Alicante city, an olive oil tasting accompanied by a delicious bread... The tour ends in Mercado Central where we could taste a cold meat from Alicante mountain and fresh fruit in another stall, mandarinas are incredible!! So, Alicante Gourmet Walking Tour was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!!!
