The central market was built in 1911 over the remains of the city walls from the 17th century. The market was built in eclectic style with modernist elements, with metal structure and brick façade. As the plot where it is placed is irregular, a rotunda was projected on the left of the main body. There is a big staircase at the main façade.
It has been reformed several times (the bombs in the civil war severely damaged it).
It is the best place to do the shopping: fresh fish, meet, fruits and vegetables, bread and bakery, salted fish…
Anything you want to eat can be found in here: fantastic fish, shellfish, Red Shrimp, rabbit, steaks, vegetables, fruits, ect, ect, ect. Or just walk around and enjoy. Meats and cheeses are upstairs, fish and veggies downstairs. There is no fish on Monday or the day after festivals. Enjoy! Follow the link attached for some more pictures from inside. If you want to buy fish, buy from Jose Zaragoza, his name is above his spot. If you want to buy Red Shrimp...first spot to the left when you get off the escalator. Delicious!
This used to be the central market. It was built in 1921 by the architect Juan Vidal. Its one of the best examples of the architecture in the twentieth centuy in the city of Alicante.
