For a country with a slow pace of life, and people of a relaxed nature ,whenever they get into a car they seem to shapeshift into some kind of Road Demon so give them plenty of room, dont expect signals and say a few prayers everytime you take to the road.

Recently near Alicante there have been gangs of people targeting tourists arriving at Alicante airport getting hire cars by highjacking them on the motorway. They follow you for a few miles and then clip your car so you have to pull over and then they nick your hire car and all it's contents. The police are cracking down on this and several gangs have been caught .Also there have been gangs going around breaking into properties etc.But the police are doing there thing and catching gangs.Just be aware that this kind of thing does happen.Be sensible at the airport and do not flash money or jewllery around and try and look confident and secure.Always lock your car and hide valubles and always lock your property up and have the telephone for police at hand. This may sound scary but it's better to be aware of it than not.Saying this crime is still lower in Spain than England and police in Spain are doing a good job to get rid of these menacing gangs and the crime rate is dropping.

No injections are required to visit Spain and the water is safe to drink but it tastes abit horrible as lots of chlorine has been added and people drink bottled water as it tastes alot nicer. The main thing to watch out for is sunburn and getting dehydrated in the hot sun.I got sunburnt and so did my hubby when we fell asleep and woke up 2 hours later red.Drink loads of water and apply a high factor sun lotion before going outside.Give it a chance to soak in and start protecting your skin.I normally take 10 and use that for first few days then goto a 8 then a 6.Also you get Mozzies too so a plug in mozzie killer and candles that put off mozzies are a good idea. You can also get sprays that you spray on skin and stops them biting.
Street-Sellers-When i goto Spain i always see people walking around selling watches and cd's etc from fishing tackle boxes. They walk around bars and restaurants at night and try to sell cheap rubbish to people.Fake watches and copied cd's.Just firmly say no to them or dont even look at them or they will be over to your table. You will also get people begging for money. There was one lady in the supermarket carpark who wanted my trolly as you had to put one euro in it to use it and she wanted the money. So I just gave it to her first time but other times said no as it can become expensive if you visit the store lots of times.

Try to avoid driving along the coast road N332 because it has many bends in the road and gets very busy with traffic.Use the Autovia and you can drive to whatever destination from there.I cannot say enough times how important good insurance is.Make sure it covers travel and medical expenses and try to keep reciepts for expenses. When i was burgled i had to goto the local police station and fill in a form and sign it(una denucia) and say all that was missing and the value of each item.
Here is the web site for the company ive booked my travel insurance with this year. Its an online company only and good value and has good cover
Police-Spain has 3 police forces.Ive met two so far.The local police(Municipal police) are run by the local town hall and goto minor happenings such as traffic incidents. The Policia Nacional are the main force in big cities and The Guardia Civil are mostly out in the countryside and on main roads. The number to call for police and fire and ambulance is 112.

Do watch out for pickpockets and do not leave your belongings laying around.Just be sensible.Spain is just as safe as England I think, you just need to use your commensense.Crime is on the increase in Costa Blanca. There has been a big increase in muggings and car thefts and burgleries on holiday homes. Some of it is down to gangs from Africa and South America and some of them have been caught. There is also lots of credit card fraud going on.Always never let your card out of your sight and be careful at hole in the wall machines.
My property has bars up all windows and doors to make it more secure. When you go out just be sensible.Crime is no worse in resort Spain than any other city or country. You just have to make sure you lock up, even if you are there, dont walk around alone after dark,,, keep your hand bag to street side away from road as hand bag grabbings are getting worse.
Just be sensible and keep hold of your goods.Dont leave anything on view in your car.Make sure you have proper insurance.
Spain has gone up in price alot over last few years.Property is going up by 30% a year in some areas including the Costa Blanca. The cost of living has also increaded and the cost of eating out etc.Saying this its still a darn sight cheaper than England.Thats why lots of people from North Europe are retiring there.I would say that food is about a third cheaper, cars are half, drink is half and household bills are slightly cheaper.Eating out is just slighty cheaper(drinks make is abit cheaper).Electric items and furniture are about the same as England.
