The 'Iglesia Arciprestal de Santa María la Mayor' is the main building of religious architecture. It was built during the 13th and 14th centuries and it is a true jewel of Gothic architecture. We have mention here the gates of 'Los Apóstoles' and 'Las Vírgenes ',the choir (15th c.), which is isolated and in elevation (one of the few exemples in the world), the main altar of Barroque styl, the stained glass windows (14th c.) an the majestic organ by Torrull (18th c.). The basilica of Santa Maria La Mayor is considered one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic church architecture, and features a stunning valued choir and carved stairway. Interestingly the construction of the choir, which is supported on four heavy pillars, employs bands of lead, 400 years before reinforced concrete was invented. The basilica has three naves and is without a transept or a cupola. It was the scene of a famous meeting in 1414 between king Fernando I, Saint Vincente Ferrer and the black pope Papa Luna to try and resolve the issue of the papacy. Leave a Comment
