The old Roman Dock is the town's landmark located at the Plaza Embarcadero. This ancient tower which was rebuilt in 14th century was used in the Middle Ages to warn the local inhabitants of impending attacks by Barbary pirates. From here you have a fantastic view of the coast until Santa Pola. During clears days, Tabarca island is also in sight.
This area is located in a secluded area of Torrelamata. The square , thus the name, boasts an old olive tree and some implements for pressing, producing and transporting La Mata's local wine. The work of Mauel Pizzana which is the image of Sacred Heart of Jesus occupies a space of this area.
The square is located not far from the beach and very close to the town. A nice area ( about a hectare) with a variety of plants and tress growing, children's play ground and boccia grounds( a sort of bowling)...a pity i can't play this game because i do not know the rules :"> I love this park because of the stray cats cared by a generous old lady.
If you are based in La Mata, you can access the paseo through Paseo de La Mata going south. It starts from where Barlovento Restaurant is located(south-end) further along the seaside reaching Cala del Moro. A fantastic area!
Day by day.........different! The best area to spot sunrises since La Mata is at the eastern part of the region. Lovely! I do wake up very early in the morning just to catch these wonderful beauty of nature not thinking it is my holiday!
This park covers an area of 500,000 m2, the largest and best conserved sand-dune in this region. It is adjoined to the Playa de la Mata and the vegetation is mainly of pine trees which is planted to stabilize the dunes. Reeds, sorts of cacrus and lilies, and many other plants are also growing here. There are network of pathways ideal for everyone.
Here in Costa Blanca, mostly in this region, the climate is stable. Unless there is a sudden deterioration in the weather. Sometimes, there are just huge waves here without rains or strong winds. It is fascinating to watch this nature though the red flag is up and swimming is absolutely prohibited.
Take time and have a walk through the promenade going to the south end. You'll enjoy the beautiful sea views or do a little shopping or just quench your thirst in one of the restaurants or even have your meals.
Another thing of interest is to visit the PARQUE LA MATA & LAGOONS due to its botanical diversity, comprising shrub and tree vegetation typical of the salt marshes, and bird activity especially the Flamingos. Some invertebrates are also present here like the Artemia Salina(sea monkey). This reserve is situated in the south of the province of Alicante close to Torrevieja. A great place for a morning and afternoon walk under shady healthy trees till to its lagoons.
It is easy to access
For every visitor who wants to enjoy time under the sun.....here's a delight for you, the blue flag carrier beach, La Mata. A very clean, fine sandy beach with its friendly atmosphere. The paseo is very inviting for a walk.
A good area to have some walks , or do your jogging or any other sport activity. We usually did ours before the sun rises and in the evening. There is a magnificent view towards the sea from the highest point
A meeting place for those who have pet dogs.
Here are the barbecues where you can cook the meat they gave to you.
I remember my mother always talked about the day of the pig, it was related of being the last day to do the "matanza" , I have to ask her again about all this.
While walking along the promenade we saw lots of people, barbecues, music everyone partying, so I asked them, and of course is the Day of the pig!
The food and wine was free you only had to put it on the barbecues .... and eat it
The lagoons of Torrevieja and La Mata will welcome you at the entrance, as the road goes in between them.
Some areas are still working salt lakes, and sometimes when they are working we had been told the smell is awful.
Due to the characteristics it became Natural protected park
The tourist Office has found a new place just off a few meters off the Main Plaza. It is now located inside the Town Hall situated in Plaza Gaspar Perelló since June 2010.
