I didn't really know that much about Valencia before I visited, but the one thing that did come to mind when I thought about the city was that Valencia was a type of orange. Valencia's have a high juice content and are sweet and delicious, so I've been told. Did that mean that oranges would be available in copious amounts in Valencia....were the 2 connected at all... Well by the looks of the orange trees covering the city, I guess they are connected!
Along with palm trees, orange trees were all about, used to line streets and footpaths. It was certainly unusual, but one of my favourite things about Valencia. Leave a Comment

The Jardines del Turia are located in the former riverbed of the River Turia. The river used to flood regularly, and after a particularly bad flood in 1957 approval was given for the river to be diverted away from the city centre. Since then, the 7km long river bed has been transformed into a mixture of playing fields, cycling & walking paths, and gardens. There is also a bizarre looking children's playground just near the City of Arts & Sciences
The Jardines del Turia are a relaxing place for a walk if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Nearest metro: Turia or Alameda Leave a Comment

Beluga by belgianchocolate Ferdinand the Beluga at Duisburg zoo has spend most of his life in that very very small basin. When his partner died and he was left alone wit a little jacobita they knew that they had to find a new home for him. After he left the two beluga's in Spain are the only Beluga's in Europa. And that is absolutely fine by me. They are fascinating creatures. And even if the enclosure they are in are very modern I don't think these whales belong in a zoo. I saw him swimming in his faka arctic giant pool , 3 rounds round and 1 time breathing. Still their looks captivated me. Beluga is a specimen of whale that can be found in the undeep arctic waters. They can grow a 4.6m long and they are born dark blue-gray or blackish. They become white cream after 4 or 5 years. A male can weight 1500 kg. They normally live in groups of 5 to 10 individuals and they are hunted for their oil , their skin and flesh. In the arctic men eat them as well as they serve for dog food. Only the idea make me shiver. They think there are about 60 000 beluga's left. Leave a Comment

by belgianchocolate If you are wondering what that strange bird is you see on buildings , on every coverage of the manholes in the streets and of the local football team. It is a bat. The symbol for Valencia. You can see them when it turns dark flying between the trees. Oh , Bats are not birds , they are mammals. Maybe a bit scary and unknown for a lot of people , but they are very useful. Leave a Comment

mola by belgianchocolate I was practically jumping up and down when I saw this fish. It was the first time in my life that I met two of these remarcable creatures. Mola in latin means : millstone In dutch we call him : maanvis , moon fish and in English they call him sunfish. Only that is remarcable. Some see in him a giant swimming head. They can weight up to a 1800 kg. There are 4 species of these sort of fish. I don't know wich this one is. The 'L'oceanografic' was a little short with information. Sunfishes are very gentle fish who feed on jellyfish, salps, ctenophores and occassionally small crustaceans and fishes. Leave a Comment

Fountain in the Plaza de la Virgen by LanaFromRiga There was a Roman forum in ancient times, now here is the fountain of rivers. The figure of laying man symbolising the river Turia. 8 women symbolising 8 channels that flow from Turia.
This place is very beautiful and calm - people sitting and watching the water, listening sounds of water. Relaxing atmosphere! Leave a Comment
