Standing beside Estacion del Norte, the Plaza de Toros is Valencia's Bullring. Said to be one of the nicest bullrings in Spain, it was built in the 19th century and is certainly attractive with its semi-circular arches and little balconies. Unfortunately we were unable to have a look inside it, so had to make so with a wander around the outside, but I believe bull fighting is still held here. Near by the Bullring is the small Museo Taurino, which houses a collection of bull fighting memorabilia. Admission is free, and entrance is via pasaje del Doctor Serra. Nearest metro: Xatira Leave a Comment

Santa Catalina Horchateria. by nhcram Although this is not a local drink it is a Spanish/Mexican drink made from Tiger nuts, sugar and cinnamon. It is very sweet and is served cold. This Horchateria in the heart of Vaencia is a pretty tiled building with a large seating area upstairs aswell as downstairs. The horchata is also made on the premises. Service was not too good though! Santa Catalina is in the Plaza Santa Catalina and is near the Santa Catalina church. Leave a Comment

by belgianchocolate Very popular all over Spain are 'chocolate con churros'. The quality of the chocolate as well as the churros differs from place to place. On the plaza de la reina you will find 'Valor' , Valor is a well known old brand of chocolate in Spain. Look inside , behind the curtains in the kitchen and you will see the machine and how they prepare them. I don't liked the churros , I loved the chocolate. I even get sick smelling them. The link contains a recipe. They are not that difficult to make and got simple ingredients. Leave a Comment

by belgianchocolate I was getting really addicted to this drink. 'Horchata' is tiger nut milc. It is very refreshing. I don't know how they make it but the quality also differs from place to place. It is not expensive and you can get it almost everywhere. It made me think of carrot juice with a really fine flavor. (but that is my interpretation and most people think I probably had a bit too much absinth) Leave a Comment

by belgianchocolate Orange juice is a popular drink around here. No wonder , Valencia is known as orange country. Valencia is surrounded by ugly apartment blocks , heavy industry , a lot of motorways and in between orange trees. Fresh juice is relative cheap and most of time served with some sugar. (because the juice is really sour) It is best squeezed by hand because a machine also gets some juice out of the peel. Leave a Comment

by belgianchocolate 'Café de Valencia' is something we had in the coffee house at the 'Mercado de colon'. -café fuerte , licor de naranja y limon - A strong coffee with orange and lemon liqueur. It is served in two different layers since the coffee and the liqueur don't mix very well. It has a special taste , you like it or you don't.. Leave a Comment

The Falles are one of Spain's most famous festivals. It takes place in mid March to honour Saint Joseph, patron of the carpenters. Originally, the city's carpenters used to make big bonfires with the rests of wood in their workshops to celebrate their patron's day. Eventually, this festival evolved as they started to build large monuments with wood and papier maché. The monuments became biger and bigger every year and are usually political or social satires of sometimes dubious taste. The construction of a falla is a huge task that involves the exclusive work of a large team of professionals (artistas falleros) during the whole year. A great attention is paid to detail and composition: the monuments are made up of a plethora of statues of different sizes disposed in an amazing equilibrium that defies gravity but which is perfectly studied, so that the falla collapses in the right way when it is lit on fire on Saint Joseph's night (many of them are located in small plazas or intersections and a miscalculation of the artistas falleros might result in a tragedy for the crowds attending the cremà or burning, and for the neighbouring buildings). The construction of so many falles around the city is, in addition, a colossal financial task which requires the year-round effort of large communities in Valencia. Leave a Comment

Doing the clown behind 2003's winner Falla by davidlop This festival makes people in this place to become mad for two weeks of partying, any age participates, and ends by a big "cremà" (burning) when all these big wooden statues burn in a few minutes... Of course, this is only the simplest way to describe it in a few words... in fact, many people is involved during many months preparing for these days, and a lot of events happen also, not only these. You may see something longer on my Fallas travelogue. Leave a Comment

Mascleta (and SirRicards head lol) by Carmela71 For someone afraid of the fireworks, can be a nightmare lol (yes thats my case hehehehe) but it was not as bad as I though it could be. For 20 minutes the only thing you could here were the fireworks at the Town Hall Square. At the end you could feel the final fireworks on your feet, as if the paviment also enjoyed the festival.... Just incredible! It is definitely a must .... Leave a Comment
