Like in the rest of Spain, the tapas choice is huge in Valencia. Apart from the typical dishes on offer all throughout Spain (patatas bravas, ham, calamari...), you can try some of the local specialities, which include:
- esgarraet: a juicy conconction of baked red peppers and courgettes with olive oil and crumbs of salted cod.
- clòtxines: the local mussels, which are smaller and with a softer flavour than the Galician ones, are usually served steamed with a tonifying laurel aroma.
- tellines: small sized clams with a delicate taste, also served steamed with a dash of lemon juice.
- sepia: cuttlefish is ususally grilled and served with an olive oil, garlic and persil sauce. Also its voluminous roe is available in some places.
These specialities are available in almost every bar, so it is difficult to recommend a particular one. The following are a few of the many places where tapas hopping is popular in Valencia:
Casa Mundo is an old-fashioned, often dirty, bar on don Juan de Austria Street, where locals meet for snacks and refreshments after the exhausting task of shopping in the main commercial area of the city. Their specialities are the fried squid rings.
La Tasca de Jesús is another popular place. It is overpriced and often overcrowded. There is no menu available and the waiter will tell you what is on offer that day or will even bring you things you did not order. The atmosphere is, however, supposed to be very Valencian. Their speciality are the fried eggs with potatoes, served in the frying pan.
Taberna El Encuentro, on Saint Vincent Street, bases its offer on the excellent quality of the products.
Finally, A Fuego Lento, in the Carmen Borrough, offers more innovative proposals in a trendier atmosphere.

This is the funniest place I've ever been while in Valencia. It's a tiny tapas bar in the remote district of Nazaret (Poblats maritims).
The owner and the waiter are so nice. The kitchen closes at 12 pm, but as there are only 3/4 little tables you will problably sit only if you go there very soon.
I liked staying at the bar choosing what to eat looking at what was coming out of the kitchen!
This place is a local's favourite, I guess, as it was packed with local people. It's quite a kitch place so don't choose it if you are looking for something hip or posh!
It's open on Sundays (It was difficult to find restaurants open on Sundays in Valencia!)
Favorite Dish: Patatas bravas, mojama and hueva, montaditos, grilled tapas.

This is another interesting spot. Nice food with fair price. Located in the barrio del Carmen, which is a lively barrio both at night and during the day (very close to the beautiful Central Market). The exact adress is Placa Mossén Sorell 9, which is a lovely square. be prepared to wait if you don't have a reservation. Full of locals.
Favorite Dish: Various tapas.

This is one of the oldest tapas bar in valencia and it offers an unforgettable atmosphere. Prepare to wait if you don't ahve a reservation. It is divided in 2 parts, the restaurant and the bar. The restaurant's side is more modern, but in my opinion what is really nice is to sit at the bar in front of huge wooden barrells. The menu for both the bar and the restaurant is the same, a selection of tapas offered combined to a great wine list.
If you have the opportunity to reserve in advance try to book the table in the middle of the 2 ambience. It combines the comfort of sitting at a real table and the warm atmosphere of the bar.
Favorite Dish: Sardines, seafood...

This restaurant was recommended by our hotel receptionist, who booked a table for us.
I'm afraid that it took us ages to find - not helped by our self appointed 'guide' who's lack of map reading skills and sense of direction plus permanant pmt meant that we arrived late, foot sore and very hungry.
Luckily the Restaurant was very nice, with friendly staff.
To be continued....

This restaurant is very hard to find, but well worth trying. It is south of the city on the road to El Saler, and is right on a quiet beach. All the rice dishes (not just the paella) are cooked to perfection. And then there is the wine list - all the best of local and other spanish wines. Les Alcluses and Enrique Mendoza Shiraz are 2 to look out for. And of course Pintia, wine from Toro.
Favorite Dish: One of the best on the menu is the Arroz Meloso Bogavante (lobster). This is similar to paella, but has a bit more liquid in it.

Saleem, is the manager and boss at the Al Sultan Restaurant. A Small cosy and very typical Lebanese restaurant. The food and service is great. If you happen to be there on a Friday or saturday for dinner you will be able to see a belly dancer in action, giving the perfect touch to this restaurant. Once you finish your dinner ask to be taken upstairs to have mint tea. The decor is superb and will surely make you feel as if you are relly in the Middle East.

You can enjoy tapas at a bar, while standing at the bar in a crowded locale or enjoy them sitting at your table in a comfortable designer restaurant. This is one of them. The pricing is pretty reasonable and the service is great. You might probably have to reserve your table in advance to assure your seats as this place if full practically all the time. They offer a very good variety of tapas on their menu card.

The are many Italian restaurants in town, this one is not one of the most glamourous locales in town, but sure is great for its food, service and pricing. Situated in the area of the city of sciences and just a few meters away from the Corte Ingles at Avenida de Francia or the Aqua shopping complex, Navonna is surely a good choice. We were attended by Hector, a great host with fantastic service.
Favorite Dish: The pizza size is generous so be cautious on the food quantity.

Spanish tapas are world famous and most of the bigger cities in the world have Spanish restaurants offering "replicas" of tapas. Nothing like trying them at a typical place, where the variety is big, where the atmosphere is authentic and transports you back in time. Bar los Caracoles is a place that opened its doors about a 100 years ago, nothing sophisticated, its just that tapas galore. The place is small and dificult at times to get a place to sit, but surely worth the wait, if you have to. The cost is very reasonable and the food is fresh and delicious.
Favorite Dish: Snails - caracoles
Calamares - squids
