Favorite thing: If you need a break from the hush & rush of Madrid, come to the Retiro. You can sit at one of its many terraces and enjoy an 'horchata' (drink made out of milk) and a spanish tortilla. You can take a boat ride on the big central lake or attend a puppet show in the open air theatre. There is also the Crystal Palace (see photo), built to house a collection of exotic plants from the Philippines, and an observatory for stargazers. On weekends, look out for street musicians, jugglers, clowns, and even gypsy fortune-tellers. On sundays is too crowded.
Fondest memory: Metro: Retiro

Green Space in the City
Favorite thing: One nice thing about Madrid is that if you look hard enough, you'll find many public squares, benches and above all green spaces like this one at the southern end of the Parque del Retiro. If you go deeper into the park, you almost feel like you're walking through the countryside.
Fondest memory: I went to the park one afternoon, intending to just pop in and snap a few pictures, but I ended up enjoying the freedom from noise and car exhausts so much that I spent a couple hours just strolling around.
They don't call it RETIRO Park for nothing!
Fondest memory: Allow plenty of time for a long, meandering walk through this oasis in the big, hot, mean, bad city. In the middle of all that strolling and wandering though, take a few pauses, observe your surroundings. This is the real Madrid. One of them, anyway.
rest for a while in RETIRO
Favorite thing: ... well, when reaching Puerta de Alcala you simply have to spend the next few hours in Parque del Retiro. Lovely park! … take the Paseo de la Argentina which takes you to a nice garden and also a place where you can see the Real Academia de la Lengua! Beautiful sight!

Parque del Retiro.
Favorite thing: This park was originally built for king Felipe IV and was opened to the public in the 1800's.
The Palacio de Cristal (see pics) was built in 1887. It was originally used to display exotic plants. Now it houses some temporary exibits.

Favorite thing: The Retiro Park in Madrid is one of the sights every tourist guide recommend. It is right to do so. The Palacio Cristal is wonderful just to look at (and of course to go into - there are exhibitions). I liked all the coloured trees around the small lake in front of it.
Favorite thing: In addtion, sculptures are found in abundance in el Retiro; one of the most important of these is the Sculpture of the Angel Caido (Fallen Angel), by Ricardo Bellver, dedicated wholly to Lucifer and said to be the only one in the whole world. The Monument to Alfonso XII was conceived by Jose Grases i Riera and meant to be viewed from the inside. The Statue of General Martinez Campos is one of the most lovely works of Mariano Benlliure. And many other statues: Pio Baroja, Ramon de Campoanmore, the brothers Alvarez Quintero, among others.
Favorite thing: The footpaths throughout el Retiro are lined with comics, street vendors, musicians, and craftsmen who add a little joy to the park and earn a few coins from the passersby that enjoy their art.
With 118 hectars, the Park contains many monuments, from the Astronomic Observatory, to the Cason y Salon de Reinos (Kings House and Hall), the current Military Museum, to unique structures that are the remains of what was once the palace of Felipe IV.
During the reign of Fernando VII, small structures, called Caprichos (Whims), were erected, some of which still conserved: la Montaña de los Gatos or Cat Mountain (now used as an exhibition hall), la Casita del Pescador or the Fisherman's hut and the Sala del Contrabandista or the Smuggler's Hall, currently used as a party hall.
In the so-called Campo Grande (Big Field) important expositions are set up in places as lovely as the Velasquez Palace, a structure of iron, brick and crystal decorated with ceramics by Daniel Suloaga, or the Crystal Palace (seen here), constructed in 1987 by Ricardo Velasquez Bosco and conceived as a heater for the exhibition of the Philipines.
My park, the Retiro park
Favorite thing: often a spot on a city mark your life. For me it has been the retiro park, it was my hangout, my spot for relaxation, fun games, first love, and to know the city ,the country of my grandparents a lot better. On the spot ,on the street, with the local people ,everyday life. A experience that lingers today when my own sons visit or I go back even on a business trip, I must stop by here. Its a magnet, its a wonderful park.
For the tourist it has wonderful displays of architecture, statues, history before your eyes and even palaces such as Cristal or Velazquez, a wonderful lake, and snack places to Florida Park for entertainement. its the lungs of the city, and everything is known here, see it here, taste it here, and come back anew ready to take on the world with Don Quixote on your side.
This is the Parque del buen retiro, may it continues to inspire and dream, and love blossoms. Enjoy it as I do.
Fondest memory: YOu can see my other two entries on it, here. My fondest memory are too many, one to ride the boats with my first girlfriend, to walk it pathways full of history and stand before the monuments of my history ,the Martinez Campo statue and the salute A Cuba monument.

El Retiro Park
Favorite thing: Without a doubt, the most emblematic example of a Madrid park is el Retiro, open space, culture in the open air and green lung of Madrid's city center, el Retiro is one of the most cosmopolitan places in the capital.
When the Count Duke Olivares gave his estate "el Gallinero" as an addition to the lands of the monastery of los Jeronimos and to construct a site for his defender Felipe IV, the improvisations that have always been followed in the construction of this park began, and continued to grow, through additions according to the necessities of the courtesans.
Favorite thing: El Estanque Grande (the Big Pond) has always be the core that has given life to the Park, dominated by the statue of Alfonso XII, this is the place where the people of Madrid prefer to spend their time, rowing in its boats, strolling along its shore or feeding its ducks.
Relaxing in Retiro Park
Favorite thing: A good place to go for a siesta or just people watch is Retiro Park. I stayed for about an hour people watching and hearing a musician play his acoustic guitar If the weather is nice people can rent rowboats.
Retiro once again...
Favorite thing: Just another moment in El Parque del Retiro. One of THE spots in Madrid... Three tired, but happy friends...
