Madrid Barajas Airport has three terminals. Terminal 1 is for most international flights. Terminal 2 is for domestic Spanish flights. Terminal 3 is for Iberia domestic shuttle and Iberia/Air Nostrum regional flights. Distance from city: 15km
To travel to city center from Barajas airport you can catch a taxi or bus or also take the metro.

I'm a bit biased (because I work for Delta Air Lines) but that's who has taken me to Madrid several times. Delta flies nonstop on nice Boeing 767s from Atlanta and New York. Delta also flies to Barcelona from Atlanta too.

Most major airlines will fly to Madrid's international airport. I travelled from Singapore by British Airways with a transit in London. I took this airline because it gave me the option of flying back from Barcelona as it has flights to both airports. Most other airlines fly to only either destination.
The airport is served by the metro and train system and there are also buses that leave for the city center at regular intervals. You can check for the schedule at the airport.
The best way to see Madrid is a combination of taking the metro and walking. Traffic is pretty bad and heavy. The city itself is very well connected by the underground system and the metro operates till 1am during weekdays and up to 2am in weekends, which is great for people who want to stay out late but not want to pay too much for cab fare.
If it is necessary to take a taxi, always check that the meter is turned on.

Madrid's Barajas Airport is a modern airport featuring shopping and cafes and three terminals. Terminal 1 is for most international flights. Terminal 2 mainly for domestic flights and Terminal 3 is for domestic shuttle and Iberia/Air Nostrum regional flights.
The other great thing about the airport is that the Metro connects it with the city! It's about 15 kilometers (9 miles) outside of Madrid.

I flew Munich - Madrid rtn with Lufthansa.
Bus takes you from Madrid airport to the Colon bus station.
The metro system was excellent, though I remember the carraiges were quite narrow in comparison to German ones. It was 130 pesetas per journey.

Madrid Barajas Airport. Number of terminals: 3. Airport facilities: Facilities available at the airport include three banks, bureaux de change, ATM machines, a post office, two pharmacies, shops, restaurants, bars, nurseries and a medical service centre in Terminal 1.
Driving directions: Access to the airport is from the N11 (and then take the N100) or from the A10.
Public transport and taxis: The taxi journey (journey time: approximately 20-30 minutes) costs about Pta2000, including a Pta300 airport charge. The yellow airport bus (tel: 91 401 9900 or 431 6192) departs every 15 minutes for the underground bus Terminal at Plaza de Colón (a 30 minute journey). The new Barajas metro (line 8) provides a fast route into central Madrid, via Mar de Cristal. There is a rail information desk available at the airport.

I had to take two airplanes to get to Madrid.
The flight was 8 hours and there was a smoking section in the back of the plane. This didn't stop the smoke from lingering throughout the entire plane.
Since the drivers can be a little crazy, I think that walking is the best way to take in the experience.
If you have a long distance to a location you should catch a taxi.

Madrid Airport is like 15 km from the city, and to get there use Metro 8 line.
There are 4 terminals of the airport, T1-T4, and the metro line calls the Aeropuerto.
