I've been to the Bodeguita del Medio in Havana and to Les Deux Magots in Paris, so I could not go to Madrid without stopping by the Cerveceria Alemana. So what do these 3 restaurants have in common? They were among American author Ernest Hemingway's favorite joints around the world! I have to say, the Cerveceria Alemana has aged very well and perhaps out of the three, it is the one that seems to have retained the most of its "old days" atmosphere. There are always many tourists around, but the menu is decidedly Spanish: you'll find all your traditional tapas there, from the tortilla española and jamon serrano to the albondigas and queso manchego. Everything was quite good and reasonably priced, the atmosphere was fun and casual... were he alive today, I think Papa Hemingway might still enjoy eating there!

Favorite Dish: The best albondigas (Spanish meatballs) I've had during my trip!

Cerveceria Alemana: Tapas and more Tapas

This bar/restaurant is over 100 years old and was a meeting place and hang out of bullfighters.

It is a busy place with a lovely, decorative interior. We managed to get a table at the rear of the restaurant which was a great position to watch the action around us.

Service was efficient and mostly friendly.

Favorite Dish: We had a selection of tapas, including croquettes, delicious ham and cheese and other tasty treats, washed down with a good bottle of rioja.

After some tapas go to have some drinks to Cerveceria Alemana in the Plaza Sta. Ana, one of my favourites.

Also at night is a good place to start the night in that Area.

Whenever I used to come to Madrid, this was the meeting point of my friends. they used to wait here for all, and them go around some of the places around Huertas.

Favorite Dish: Neares tube: Sevilla or Sol
