Well, in case you didn't know, being a vegetarian in Spain is not the easiest! So I want to include here a tip for all the vegetarians going to Madrid.
Al Natural is a very cosy and not too big restaurant in the central area of Madrid. For lunch they usually have a menu (3 courses) with different options (sometimes also for non-vegetarians!) to choose from, for a very reasonable price. The food is creative and quite good. At night there is no menu, but the prices are still acceptable.
I have been to Al Natural a few times with friends and it was always great, I've tried different menus which never disappointed me, whatever they were!
This last Christmas I was in Al Natural again and I have to say: it's getting quite famous!! I went without a reservation and we had to wait for quite some time so if you decide to try it out.... do it right and reserve!! Also I went there with a friend who would NEVER go to a vegetarian restaurant on his own and he LOVED it... so give it a try!!

One of my favorite places is on the walking street between Sol and Plaza Mayor. Its not typically frequented by tourists because its not exactly a charming place, with the bright lights and mirror lined walls and there are no tables, just a few stools along both walls. And its sometimes crowded so you can't sit down. So do like the Spanish do, stand. Its called Cerveceria Sol Mayor and the tapas are great, the decoration very 80s and the service is always loud and with a smile. Very Madrileno!
Favorite Dish: Tortilla Espanola, Patatas Bravas, Championes (mushrooms), Pescado Adobado, Calamares. And many more!! The bocadillo de calamares (Fried squid sandwich) is a typical Madrid thing too but I prefer my Calamares without all that bread.

No trip to Spain would be complete without sampling Spain's culinary masterpiece Paella. It is a rice dish mixed with either chicken (Paella valencia) or seafood (Paella mariscos) and infused with saffron. This is a definite must eat experience but bring a big appetite!

I have eaten here a few times and although its almost all foreigners eating here the homemade paellas are great and the service always very attentive and friendly. My mom liked it so much we had to go back the next time she was in town.
Favorite Dish: We probably had a Chicken/Seafood Paella, MMM!!

This is not a tip about a specific place but in general in Madrid you would see displays like the one in this picture in the windows.
I think this is capable of turning you away from Ham but I can tell you the curred Ham I tried in Madrid and other parts of Spain was great so don't be turned away from the pigs hanging in the windows :-)

This beer house is not the cheapest or the best, but here you can try "excellent seafood", from shrimps to crabs...
Is very popular and uses to be crowded, but is worth the effort.
Open noon to midnight.

This is a typical tavern in the centre of Madrid, just behind the Palace Hotel, in the "literary quarter". You will easily identify it from outside, as its walls are covered with tiles refering to wines, beers...
There is a wide variety of beers here, though the star is the traditional caña (pronounce it "cagna"), a small glass of draught beer (1 euro).
The interior is decorated old style with beer bottles and wood. High ceilings.

Either sit outside and watch the world go by while sipping a coffee or dine inside.
Inside at lunchtime it has a traditional Spanish flavour. The bar is lined with tapas while waitors scurry round.
Clean, fast service. While I'm vegetarian in Spain that can be hard to maintain. So while putting my ethics on hold I did taste the roast chicken and grilled hake and they were both very good - I can't see how anyone could complain if they tried either of those dishes.
Plus we both got a large apple liquer on the house which sent us off to the airport with a warm inner glow.
The menu of the day as with many restaurant/bars provide the best value for money - 3 course meal and a bottle of wine for around £6.30 / 9E
Favorite Dish: Menu del dia was 9E
Roast chicken about 10E
Grilled Hake about 17E
Bottle of Rioja 10E

the drinks came soon. but the food lasted long. after my husband asked. they told him that it came.
only one of us did get food.
after 2 times asking. we told them we wanted the bill and didnot want to pay for what we didnot get.
so waste of time.
this was one of the places you could sit out side.
Favorite Dish: nothing
