In my opinion, the entire city of Madrid runs on very little sleep, but perhaps it is even more obvious along Gran Via, one of its most famous streets. With its hundreds of shops, restaurants, theatres and hotels, Gran Via's sidewalks are always full of people day and night, which gives it the atmosphere of a small Broadway street. The architecture of Gran Via is also strikingly different from that of the old city, thanks to the fact that most buildings date back to the same turn of the 20th century period (over 300 buildings were destroyed to make way for Gran Via).

The street begins at the corner of Calle de Alcala and ends at the Plaza de España, where you'll find a nice little park with a gigantic monument to Cervantes. Although Gran Via can be divided into three main sections, two main architerctural styles stand out in my opinion: starting at the corner of Calle de Alcala, it is easy to see that the first portion of the street was clearly inspired by 19th century Parisian architecture. In fact, French architects Jules and Raymond Fevrier designed the famous Metropolis building which sits at the very beginning of the street. But as you move towards Plaza de España, you can see that the style of the buildings gradually became influenced by the Chicago school of American architecture, giving way to the city's first high-rise buildings. No doubt you'll look like a tourist, but once you're done shopping, it's worth walking around and looking up to see all the beautiful architectural details that grace the buildings located all along Gran Via.

One of the main and busiest streets in Madrid is the Gran Via. It's in the central area from Madrid, and it's not difficult to find. Things you can find in the Gran Via are mainly: Shops, Cafes, Cinemas, Theatres, a few Hotels, as well as some amazing architecture! As you walk up (or down) the Gran Via make sure you pay attention to the amazing buildings on the sides. This street is most days of the year packed with people, especially around the Callao area.

Making 4 items out of Gran Via means that i really like this place. The street is magnifant and you get pain in your neck when looking all the time up to the tops of the buildings. Espacuially at night you should walk Gran Via the buidlings are lighted up and it feels like a fary tale walking along them. Just stroll aloing the street and experience its atmosphere, the people walking by and the night lights...its wonderfull!

Gran Via is one of the main big streets in the city. It was set in the middle of XIXth century and was supposed to be the symbol of modern Madrid. Without any doubt it still holds this title. Most of the buildings along the way were built in the beginning of XXth century and they are really amazing, the best examples of XX century architecture in the city. Gran Via made a really big impression on me.

defenitely my favourite! As in the 1850's Madrid devellopped to become a big city it was necessarily to expand. Modernite archtects of Spain got the dedication to experiment with city planning acording to their Fench neighboars in Paris. (the Hausmanization project that teared down the whole inner city in favour of grand avanues) So the Gran Via became into being. Gran via had just like ijn Paris, to be the symbol of a modernit? Madrid. Allthough the plans for Gran Via were already send to the Ayuntamiento as early as 1860, the Gran Via project got its approval by the city coucil in the beginning of the 20 th century. The gran via consisting 3 parts: the street between Plaza Espana to Callao, (which is of lest interrest) the Plza Callao, and the Calle de Alca, which contains some very beuatifull pieces of Modernity architecture. Nowadays Gran via is a crowded avanue with shops restaurants and offices. Its the main road of the town connecting Plaza Espana to Plaza de Cibelis.

Just at the corner of Calle de Alcalá and Gran Vía is situated this magnificent building, built at early 20th century by French architects. An Insurance Company has its headquartesrs here.

En la esquina de la Calle de Alcalá y la Gran Vía se encuentra este magnífico edificio, construido a comienzos del siglo XX por arquitectos franceses. Una compañía de seguros tiene su sede central en él.

The Gran Via is Madrid's main street. It's the central nervous system of this impressive city. Walking along this street is quite nice. You'll always find a nice store, a good restaurant, a nice cafe... or maybe stop and contemplate the wonderful façades of the buildings around it.
The Gran Via is to Madrid what Champs-Elysees is to Paris. Need to say more?
