    Natural beauty in the Parque
    del Oeste

Parque del Oeste is sort of located at the opposite end of the city center to the Parque del Retiro. Whereas the Retiro has been designed and shaped to look sort of like a gigantic French garden, Parque del Oeste has been more or less left to its natural state, and has more to do with traditional English gardens. Only a few walking trails have been added in the park, as well as a rose garden. It is less popular and therefore much more quiet than the Retiro, and as such it offers a nice alternative to the frantic pace of the city.

The park wasn't always this peaceful, though. Spanish Civil War buffs will know that this park was the scene of many battles, to the point where some parts were completely destroyed. It is still possible to see some defense structures that date back to the Civil War, and if you look close enough, you can see some bullet holes in some of the park's monument.

This temple was a present from egyptian gouverment for Spanien (1960)
You can see this temple in Parque del Oeste. I was not inside, before it is open to 18, and I was there afternoon.
In this park there is too a terrace and you can enjoy excellent view of Madrid`s panorama. This is very nice to make a walk there and look for great palmtrees or oleanders.

Botanical Garden or Arboretum is a very nice park; it was created by King Carlos III (Charles the Third, "the best mayor, the king") in 1781.
The picture shows a freezing pond and the monument of Linnaeus.

San Isidro is the Patron Saint of Madrid... and is celebrated in fiesta in May as part of a week-long event. The Park in his name is located within 5 minute's walk from the Atletico Madrid football stadium, and is a little tucked away, so even more of a pleasure to encounter.

The park is of medium size, very well maintained with lots of wonderful fountains... and offers dedicated space for several sports. These include:

    - basketball (dedicated court and 3 other sets of nets in a less well-maintained court - good practice area)
    - volleyball - 3 nets... with a dedicated following of players and their supporters
    - table tennis - many tables
    - football (2 pitches. It is possible this particular space requires pre-booking. I will update this tip once I have confirmed this point).

Also in the park are many picnic tables - for those who don't feel like sitting on the lovely green spaces for their lunch and snacks - as well as lots of spots designed for exercises - complete with instruction boards.

Finally, you will also find a lovely sculpture of Goya in the park, just by a high point where it is possible to look across the city of Madrid and even see the mountains in the distance!!

El Retiro is the most beautiful park of Madrid. Ok, that was a completely gratuitous and partial affirmation, as I live near that area, so you better check by yourself among the other interesting options... which is exactly what I did the other day.

El Parque del Oeste (literally Park of the West) is a pretty nice recreational area next to Plaza de España. I particularly find it a little bit dull an uninteresting, BUT the place has the most spectacular sunset of the entire city. If you arrive there in time to see how the last ray of sun disappears between the mountains that surround Madrid... well, you'll witness something similar to the picture next to this tip. It left me completely speechless... quite an unusual thing, I must say ;-)

  • Debod's Temple - Madrid
    Debod's Temple
    by agarcia
Not many years ago, you could have visited pieces of Ancient Egypt in every mayor European city... except in Madrid. London or Paris showed proudly the sackings of their colonial pasts, while Madrid, as the capital of a Colonial nation which committed countless robberies in its own colonies, couldn't. I know what you're thinking: that was totally unfair! :-p

But during the 70's, the Egyptian government donated one of their spare Temples to the city of Madrid. Actually it was that or been flooded by the construction of the Assuan Dam... so that's the story of the oldest building in town ;-)

Actually, the name of this square is "Plaza de la Hispanidad", though I think everybody in the city knows it as Plaza de Colón, or just Colón (Spanish version for Columbus). The reason for that name is the huge statue dedicated to the memory of Spain's most famous trickster; the one that sell an impossible history to the Kings of Spain regarding an unknown route to the East... sailing to the West. Yeah, whatever, as if the world where round ;-)

At the feet of Columbus, there's a beautiful artificial waterfall, which is actually one of the most refreshing places to be in Madrid during a torrid summer afternoon. Special thanks to my beautiful model ;-)

    Its main highlights are:
    - The lake with terraces for food and drinks
    - The zoo
    - The theme parks (Parque de Atracciones)
    - The swimming pools (from June to September)
