    Retiro Park

    El Retiro

Retiro was built for one of the Spanish Kings but was then opened to the public in the 1800's. The central focus of the park is the lake that contains the monument to Alfonso XII.

    Parc Retiro

This is a great place just to take a break. Snooze on the grass. Picnic and people watch. Lots of trees and lanes to wander.

    El Angel Caido

They said this sculpture/fountain, made by Ricardo Beliver and unveiled in 1878, is the only public monument of Lucifer or "the Fallen Angel" (El Angel Caido) in the whole world.

    Lazy Sundays in Retiro Park

    by laosa13 Updated Feb 10, 2004

Retiro Park is a cool Urban Oasis in Madrid. A great place to kick back, read a book, pack a picnic and people watch. A great way to spend a summer Sunday afternoon like the locals do :-)

    Palacio de Cristal, Stairs

The Crystal Palace is very light, and this open stair with its columns and ionic capitals is a airy but monumental sight.

    Yellow Path, Parque del Retiro

All was silent except for the rustling of leaves as I walked down another path, not sure of what direction I was now going...

    Green Path, Parque del Retiro

Walking through a gate and getting lost on a path is a such a treat in the middle of a city, and this park was even more lush and deserted than I could have imagined.

While wondering in Retiro parque we found this very nice palace, made of glass and steel in 1886. When we were there we couldn't enter, but there isn't much to see on the inside.

crisp, dry air feels sooo nice!

    ...the lovely Crystal Palace, deep in the heart of Retiro Park. On a bright, sunny, clear autumn afternoon, things couldn't have been more perfect. Almost. ;-}

The pond with monument to Alfonso XII in the back

It's a huge park just in the middle of the city. You can come here for a walk, sit in the shadow, or rent a paddle boat on the little pond.

    gardens

The place is huge with many gardens. Coming and walking under the shadows of the trees is wonderful, especially in those hot summer days.
