If you're in a hurry, or just want to wander thru center city, this is one of my favourites walks...

From Puerta del Sol, walk to Plaza Mayor (coffee break!). Enjoy it!. Try not to eat here, as most of places are for tourist and... ok, kind of expensive.

Walk through the opposite side to S. Felipe Neri, then Calle Toledo. You will soon reach Cebada's market and following Calle S. Francisco you'll reach Plaza de San Andres.
Alternate you can walk down thru Cava Baja (this street is full of tapas!) and reach same Plaza.

Any place in that zone is great for tapas... Even better for dinner! Also for a late drink until 3 AM.

Follow the street until you reach the church of S. Francisco el Grande. Then turn right to get Bailen and go aaaaaall along the street to enjoy some great city views from Viaducto, then Royal Palace & Plaza de Oriente & gardens of Campo del Moro.

Turn right to Calle Reyes to arrive to Plaza de España, then right to go back to Gran via.

At Callao square turn right to get Preciados then you'll be back in Puerta del Sol.

Check directions at the map. Also chek them at http://callejero.lanetro.comr />
I recommend this walk during afternoon-night. Even better during weekends, but some places can be crowded. During morning you can also enter churches, palace...

Salamanca is one of Madrid's most elegant neighbourhoods with high end shopping and residences. The district was planned in the 19th century for Madrid's bourgeoisie and has since remained an affluent area of the city. The shops in the trio Calle de Serrano, Calle de Goya and Calle de Velazquez in Salamanca contain Madrid's most expensive and famous labels. Whether you plan to spend the money or not, a walk along these elegant avenues is well worth considering to see a different face of Madrid. The area also has some tasty restaurants as well as several museums such as the Museo Arqueológico Nacional.

It is possible to leave Plaza Mayor through southeast arcades on Calle de Atocha. There is beautiful Palacio de Santa Cruz on this street. The building was constructed in style of a baroque by architect Gomes de Mora in 1620-1640. Now the building belongs to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A wide street cutting through Old Madrid, la Calle Mayor leads from Puerta del Sol to Catedral de la Almudena, passing close to Plaza Mayor and through Plaza de la Villa. Easter processions begin on Calle Mayor before passing through Plaza Mayor. A walk through Calle Mayor with a couple of diversions is a good way to see parts of the old city.

Gran ViaThe sidewalks all around Madrid are friendly for those who want to enjoy the daily life in the streets.

Musicians, singers, dancers and all kind of activities are happening all the time, but in a safe way.

Walking, bus or metro, the feeling is the same. Safety everywhere

I came and after some refreshment i started my trail with a friend. Since my homebase is somewhere at Diego Leon, so we started our walks from there. We came across to those famous places like Plaza Colon, Plaza de Cibeles, Puerta del Sol, Calle mayor, Plaza Mayor, Plaza de la Villa, Cathedral Almudena, Palacio Real, Plaza de Oriente and so on. I couldn't say anymore what i have seen on that very first time i stepped my feet in the city. There's no doubt, this is one of the best way to see more of the place.

Parkway Paseo del Prado has been laid in the XVIII century. Since then and till now the parkway is the most fashionable place for walks. Streets adjoining to parkway represent "museum district". Tthe best museums of Spain are located there: Prado museum, the Museum of Applied art, the Museum of Army, the Museum of Tissen-Bornemis and others.

A small circular plaza just east of Puerta del Sol, Plaza de Canalejas boasts some stunning architecture (see photos). The plaza is on a direct route from Puerta del Sol to Plaza Canovas del Castillo where some of Madrid's most famous museums (el Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza) are located. Stopping to admire the architecture, or for a break at one of the plaza's cafés is worthwhile. At night, the plaza is also very lively with bar hoppers and those drinking chocolate before returning home at the early morning hours.

This old nice quarter of Madrid remains almost untouched from the Golden Age times. Its red brick buildings and narrow streets take you back in time as you walk by.
You can start the walk from the Plaza de la Villa (Townhall) in the "Mayor" street and keep walking with no fix destination...

If you are in the Sol area you will find the Km. 0 of Spain! It's a small sign on the floor that marks the start of the national roads of the country. You will find the Km. 0 right in front of the entrance of the Clock building. It also is a key meeting point for people, so prepare for it to be busy!!
