Fun on the bus by nhcram The ideal way to get to know Madrid is to take the tourist buses. For one price you get the opportunity to ride on one or all of the three buses. There is a good commentary and through headphones provided you can choose from a number of different languages. The red route takes you on the historical Madrid route. The blue route takes you on the modern Madrid route and the green route is the monumental Madrid. It is an excellent way to see the city and you don’t wear out your shoe leather in the process. Note the places of interest to you and visit them later. The red and blue routes last approximately 75 minutes each and the green route is about 40 minutes long. A one day ticket is 13 Euros and a two day ticket is 17 Euros. (discounts for young people and senior citizens.) Leave a Comment

View from up high. by nhcram Opening in 1969 and connecting Madrid city centre to Casa de Campo is the Telerifico. It is a Gondola style car the rides high above Madrid. It takes 11 minutes to complete the ride (seemed more like 111 to me) The views across Madrid and then across the vast shrubland of Casa de Campo were worth me being scared!! The trip costs 3.10 Euros for a single and 4.45 for the return journey. You can take the ride from near to the Templo de Debod just down the road from the Palace gardens. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Clean, quick and easy by nhcram The metro goes all the way from the airport to the rest of the city so it is easy and fairly quick. We never had to wait long and the journey was a fraction of the price of either the bus or taxi. A One-way ticket is €1.15 and is valid for any one way journey within the whole network (A bargain) A map of the metro can be downloaded from the website. The journey from the airport to the Puerto del Sol took about 40 minutes. Leave a Comment

The streets of Madrid by scottishvisitor If time is limited - go by bus Madrid Vision - your guide will point out all the places of interest. Sit on the top deck & take lots of pics - don't do what Ken & Harry did & come back with a very red face - sun block required!!! Leave a Comment

El Oso y El Madroño by jamiesno Like in any city if you are going to separate you have to know where you are going to meet up with your friends again. In Madrid a lot of people meet at the "bear". This is a statue of a bear and tree at Peurta Del Sol the center of Madrid and Spain. This symbol of Madrid is a 20 ton statue of a bear eating fruits from a tree. The official name of the statue is 'El Oso y El Madroño'. The Madroño is a tree related to the strawberry tree. You can see it here in my picture. In is on the opposite side of the clock at Puerta Del Sol I remember. The bear itself if a true Madrid symbol you will see in many places around the city and is also part of the city's coat of arms. So once you get oriented and you want to know where we will meet. "We'll meet back at the bear!" Warning though, a lot of people meet back at the bear :-), so you might have to still have a good eye. Map of Madrid's Metro System by Paul2001 Madrid has a highly functional metro/subway system that will get you to most of the important tourist attractions within the city. As I was staying at a hotel right on the Puenta Sol, this was very valuable. It seems like virtually everyone of the seven subway lines in the city passes through the Puenta Sol. The subway cost .95 Euros to use which for a city of this size, is good value. For 5 Euros, you can also purchase ten tickets. Leave a Comment

Ok, so as soon as you step in the hall of the entrance of Barajas, buy a METROBUS, a ticket for 10 metro rides and the buses. Go to the Metro, which is a bit… well not far, but you need to do some walking. Take the metro to the station NUEVOS MINISTERIOS, and over there you change it to line 10, that can take you to Alonso Martínez, which is pretty much centrally located. Although the stations GRAN VÍA, Puerta del Sol, Callao… are the ones in the very centre. Normally it is lines 1 and 5. The Metro, I think, is pretty easy to use and... quite practical. In case you need to travel WAY TOO EARLY in the morning, like I did, well.. there is always the option taqxi/cab. The hostel "Las Murallas" scheduled one for me, for 5:15 am, and it didn't cost too much... 20 euros. Or more precisely 16 with additional 4 because it was a night tarif. Leave a Comment

The starting point by SirRichard At "Paseo del Pintor Rosales" you can take this funicular that will take you to the "Casa de Campo" park, where the zoo and the "Parque de atracciones" are. Besides goiing to "Casa de Campo" for a walk around, the ride lets you see from the air part of Madrid: Manzanares River, Casa de Campo, Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, Debod Temple... Once you get there, there is a nice terrace for drinks / lunch with good views. To get to the teleferico, go to Arguelles Metro Station, go down Marques de Urquijo street till the park and in the corner you will find some blue signs. Go down the stairs till "Balcon de Rosales" restaurant, turn right and go down a few steps more. Price 2,85 euros (4,10 return). Leave a Comment

Metro Madrid by Frisbeeace Here you have the chance to save some euros. If you take a cab it will charge you in-between E25-E35. However, if you take the Metro it will cost you only E1.25 per person. The catch is that you will have to drag your bags up and downstairs a couple of times even though most trams have mechanic staircases. Not too bad but may be too much for older people. The best itinerary from the airport is to take the Metro to Nuevos Ministerios, then switch to the blue line until Tribunal station and from there on take the light blue line either to Gran Via or Sol, depending where your hotel is. The trip will take you around 45'. Leave a Comment
