Perhaps it is this way all over Europe, but since our first experience was in Spain, I'm placing it here.
For the first 10 minutes upon entering our room we thought we were given a room without power. None of the lights would turn on, the air conditioning wasn't on, and we were just about to give up until we noticed an interesting slot next to one of the light switches by the door. I stuck our key in and suddenly there was light!
A wonderful and economical way to conserve energy and power but please make sure you get two keys for your room- one to take and one to leave in your power slot so that the air conditioning will stay on while you're gone! And beware... your housekeeper may remove your air conditioning key while you're gone! We found this to be the case in several Spain hotels we stayed in.
