Land of pastoral beauty

by DanielF

Extremehard is, economically, the least favoured of the Spanish regions. For centuries, the lack of opportunities has turned this land into a source of emigrants to other Spanish regions and to the rest of the world. The lack of infrastructures and large industrial facilities, however, has allowed for the preservation of an environment of serene beauty where the traditional human activities are tolerated by Mother Nature like in a sort of mythical Arcadia felix.

Extremadura web site

by Carmela71

I have to say that this Extremadura web is one of the best I have seen from many communities of Spain. In many languages, lots of excursions and tourist information. Well worth to check if you plan to visit this area.http://www.turismoextremadura.com/ingles/guiaprofesional/home.htmlThere is another one, but this one only in Spanish, but if you want to ahve a lookwww.verextremadura.com

Plasencia

by Carmela71

Plasencia is north of Cáceres and is the second largest town in the province. Some places to visit are the Santa María Cathedral, the Plaza Mayor and walk along the streets. In august (middle August) there is a Medieval market that deserves a visit, when I went they were preparing it as it was the following week.

Another good page, but I am afraid only in Spanish, the best is that you can print from here a map of Merida, so it will help you in your trip planning.http://www.merida.es/callejero.aspalso some routes aroundhttp://www.merida.es/rutas.asp

TRUJILLO

by Carmela71

This town is famous as Francisco Pizzaro who led the expedition that conquered the Inca Empire in Peru in the 16th century was born thereI did not expected Trujillo to be so charming, a friend of work was from there and always was talking about the city, so we headed there, and we did not regret it.

Location

by micas_pt

Extremadura is an Autonomous Community situated in the Centre of Spain, bordered by Castilla y Leon on the North, Castilla la Mancha to the East, Andalucia on the South and Portugal on the West. This Autonomous Community is “divided” into 2 Provinces, namely: Cáceres and Badajoz. From the mentioned, I have visited some destinations in all of them, but I wish I had visited a lot more.

Countryside and weather

by micas_pt

The countryside in Extremadura is also pleasant and nice to enjoy, ranging from plains and a somewhat arid landscape in its lower side, and a greener mountainous area and Natural Parks on the North of Cáceres Province. Weather can be tough in Extremadura, as summer months are very very hot and winter is most times cold.

Villages and Towns in Extremadura

by micas_pt

In Extremadura, an Autonomous Community lacking mass tourism, you will find some amazing Roman ruins in Mérida area and an extremely well kept medieval village built within walls and classified by Unesco as World Heritage - Cáceres, the Monumental City. Trujillo, a most pleasant quiet town, is the birthplace of some of Spain's major conquerors and sailors. Extremadura, as I mentioned previously, lacks mass tourism, so it is a nice place to explore by those who prefer the quietness and the off the beaten path. Cáceres and Mérida's Roman Theatre may tend to be a bit more visited than other Extremeñas towns and villages, but still nothing that compares to major touristy destinations in Spain.

Cleaning up consciences

by DanielF

Like in the rest of central Spain, storks show a preference for nesting on church bell towers. The populations of this mythic bird have boomed in Extremadura in the last decades to a point where there is not a single elevated building or ruin which does not overpopulated with these heavy constructions. We were surprised to see how this forest of poles had been erected in the middle of nowhere in order to provide place for storks to nest. Watching the arrival of hundreds of storks to their nests before the sunset was a wonderful spectacle. Our surprise was even bigger when we noticed that this forest of nests was erected on the grounds of a hunters society.

A: I checked the bus link and noticed they have a contact email - perhaps best would be to drop them a note. I've had good results that way, usually get a reply.
