like all plaza mayor in Spain, they cannot be missed, this is the center of the old town, where the main sights are, and history is before your eyes. Trujillo is no exception.

From this land, the great conquerors of Spain Pizarro for Peru Orellana for Chile, and other set sail for the curiosity of the sea even if from inland lands.

The Plaza Mayor is full of history with many buildings already describe here such as the church of San Martin, Palace of the Pizarro's, Palace of Carvajal Vargas, Palace of Chaves-Orellana, etc.

There is quaint nice cafes and bars all around it, but need to park away from it if coming by car, the parking and car traffic is guarded with care by the local police.

    Palace of Carvajal Vargas -Trujillo

by gwened Written Sep 23, 2012

Also known as the house of the Dukes of San Carlos.

The palace was built in the middle of the 16th century for Diego de Vargas Carvajal, Lord of Puerto de Santa Cruz. Constructed just a few years before the Palace of the Marquis de la Conquista with which it shares many similarities, it is the grandest example of Extremaduran renaissance civil architecture. This can be seen from features such as the extraordinary corner balcony, the unusual chimneys and the detail on the facades. It is also famous for its internal patio and the ornate flying stone staircase, completed in about 1650

One of the conquerors of Spain, and discovered for them Peru. It is in the plaza mayor

Also known as the house of the Marquis of La Conquista, (marquis of the conquest).

The palace was the home of Hernando Pizarro y Vargas and Francisca Pizarro Yupanqui, brother and daughter respectively of Francisco Pizarro, the conqueror of Peru. Building was commenced in 1560 . The shield depicts a few scenes the history of the conquest including the arrival of ships ,the walls of Cuzco, together with the Incan Emperor Atahualpa and his chiefs, and is a dramatic reminder of the role that Pizarro played in the conquest of the Incan Empire. The interior of the palace, similar to the exterior, is built in a renaissance extremaduran style incorporating not only indigenous decorative features, but also Castilian and Italian touches.

    Big Bird Watching

Each year the White Storks nest in the high spots in Trujillo and surrounding countryside. Take a walk up the hill overlooking the town to better see these magnificent birds arriving from foraging flights to feed their young. Their shear size and white plumage allow viewers even with the naked eye to observe their movements as they collect food on the plains below.
It was wonderful to also see dotted around the countryside false electricity pylons (ie no electric wires) built specifically for nesting storks.
