Basilica de Santa Maria

The Basilica of Saint Mary is the main church in Oldbridge. It was built by the local seamen on the highest point of the old town, from where there is a good panoramic of the river lerez mouth and the whole stuary. It is a work of the XVI century in a late Gothic style with a plateresque façade. It is considered by many as the summit of Isabeline Gothic in Galicia.

And most important for all VT members, is that one of its chapels is consacrated to the Christ of the Good Trip. Pay a visit to him and you will be blessed with protection and joy for the rest of your trip. That is what Oldbridgeans have done for centuries.

The pilgrim Virgin

A Virxen Peregrina

It is a well known fact that Saint Sebastian is the patron of Oldbridge. But not so many people know that the patronnes is Mary of the O. Actually, the fervent devotion that most Oldbridgeans profess for the Pilgrim Virgin easily leads to the false conviction that she is the real patroness.

It is undeniable, though, that the Pilgrim Virgin is one of the prettiest representations of Our Lady. Many people even define it as a porcellain doll. A cute one, with its pilgrim gown and walking stick.

Praza da Virxen Peregrina

As you enter Oldbridge's historic area, the first monument that strikes your eyes is this small but tall Barroque chapel. In Galicia, even the Holy Mary is a pilgrim in the road to Saint James and, even if Oldbridge is not situated on the main road to Saint James, this chapel is full of symbolisms related to the pilgrimage. As a matter of fact, the chapel itself has the shape of a scallop-shell: All pilgrims traditionally carry one of these shells and it is thus one of the main symbols of the Saint.

Pontevedra has a lot of beautiful churches to visit, even if you don't go inside, take your time to look at the facades, they're wonderful!

In the heart of the old city, Saint Barthelemew is a Barroque church built by the Jesuits, as the lines of its petreous façade clearly tell.
