In Santo Domino de la Calzada you will find a very special kind of a sweet desert that reflects the so-called chicken-miracle of this place ! ( I explained the chicken-miracle in one of the tips about the cathedral.)
Favorite Dish: "ahorcadilos" is the name of this macabre desert, take a look at my main picture here and you will see a "hanged man" surrounded by a scallop-shell.
Tasted very sweet and had some jam inside as well.
Other local deserts are the chicken-pastries like shown in my extra-pics!
This is a good example of a small cafe along the Camino, where someone had the idea to start a business along the Camino, where more than 100.000 peregrinos/pilgrims will pass by throughout each year and there is almost no other place to take a rest for quite some distance.
It might have been the school-house once as the building looks like a schoolhouse and it is called Bar "El Escuela"
Favorite Dish: I just had a coffee
Parada del Peregrino is the name of a cafe/restaurant along the Camino in Pieros (a village right after Cacabelos that is not listed as a seperate VT-location). That cafe is brand new and the local lady (obviously the owner) spoke also very well german, she has spent some time in Austria.
Take a look at my extra-pics as well, they have seats and sofas of all sorts and a good choice of sandwiches, drinks and snacks, you can get Muesli-bars as well, fresh fruits and more.
The lady there told me in May 2012 that they also plan to build an albergue next to the cafe quite soon. This cafe belongs to a vinery, whose webpage is shown below !
Toilets are also very clean and you get soap and papertowels - unfortunately that is not always the standart along the Camino !
This cafe opens daily at 07.00am !
Favorite Dish: I had some coffee and pocadillos (=sandwiches) as a second breakfast.
La Posada de Muriel is the name of this nice cafe, where I had my breakfast the other morning. They have some seats on a terrace directely next to the road through the town of Molinaseca, that is the Camino at the same time.
This place is a hotel as well - see their webpage below - and they have a lot of antiques in their cafe - like shown in my last picture !
Favorite Dish: I had some applecake and strong coffee ("Cafe con leche" is what you have to order) and I had that funny seat on a bench made of an old wooden wheel.
Meson Puento Romano is the name of a restaurant, next to the roman bridge and with a scenic terrace facing the river. They will serve a "Menu del peregrino" all of the afternoon untill late at night and I was happy that they had no "Siesta" like other restaurants, where you will not be able to get any food between 04.00 and 09.00pm.
Favorite Dish: The price for the Pilgrim-menu here is 8 euros, when you eat in the restaurant and 9,50 euros when you eat on the terrace.
I had a garlic-soup as 1st course, then a trout and finally some icecream for desert, take a look at my extra pictures, a lot of restaurants in Spain will serve a packed icecream like a "Magnum" for desert, when you take the "Menu del Peregrino" !
It was a very good choice !
I doubt very much that this great cafe has a name at all, BUT I was really glad to find this table there with self-service of snacks, great coffee, water and juice.
There are no prices indicated, you simply give a donation according to your possibilities !
In any case you will also get a stamp into your pilgrim-pass there - my last picture !
Favorite Dish: I had some great pinapple-juice and was really surprised to find that kind of juice there at all.
When you are walking some hours without any place to take a rest you will be happy for a place like that, serving hot coffee and cold drinks and a boccadillo and even when the man at the bar did not speak anything else than spanish, he served me still one of the best sandwiches I had on the Camino !
In my last picture: they even have a machine for massages for the feet ! ;-)
Favorite Dish: I had this bocadillo with tomatoes and tunafish: delicious !!!
This place was very good in the morning, because they served a good breakfast there after 08.00am., a fact that unfortunately does not apply to all albergues along the Camino !
They also have lots of drinks and small dishes during the day and I really liked their decorations in the bar !
Favorite Dish: I had some toasted bread with butter and jam and a cup of strong coffee for a total of 3,00 Euros, so that was fine and I also could have had "uovos frittos con jamon", fried eggs with ham.
Meson Cowboy / (Cowboy-house) is the name of this scenic and funny cafe that you will find in the very centre of the village, when you walk on the Camino.
At the same time it is the only shop of this tiny village with not more than just 40 inhabitants and it is a simple restaurant as well with some tables in a garden next to it.
Favorite Dish: I just had a coffee and a "bocadillo" (that is the local name for sandwich).
Prices are quite low as well - like in general in Spain - you will get a strong coffee for 1 euro and a large bocadillo for about 3 euros ! Softdrinks like Coke etc. are 1 euro or maybe 1,50 for 0,33l !
The bar and restaurant El Caminante is a good place for a stop when you walk the Camino / St.James Way / Jakobsweg.
Favorite Dish: I had some sandwiches (in Spain they call it: pocadillo) and a coffee in the afternoon and I also took the dinner for pilgrims in the evening. After 08.00am they also serve breakfast (I mention that here because unfortunately that is not always the case in spanish hotels / albergues !!!)
In my main picture: uovos frittos con jamon (fried eggs with ham) and almost any time you order something to eat, bread will be served with it as well, and it is free of charge !
Hotel "Palacio De Pujadas" is a great 4-star-hotel, but they also serve a dinner for peregrinos / pilgrims every day at around 07.00pm. No deed to stay in that hotel in order to enjoy this special dinner !!!
Favorite Dish: "Menu de Peregrinos" is always a dinner with 3 courses and for each course you can choose from various dishes on a list. Half a litre of red wine and water is included as well in the total price of 12,50 Euros.
That is a bit more than the 8-10 euros that you pay normally, but take a look at the great ambiente, white tablecloth and cloth-napkins etc.
My last 3 pictures: the breakfastbuffet for hotel-guests !
This restaurant is open between 01.00 and 10.00pm, that is quite unique in Spain and along the Camino and they offer a "Menu del Peregrino" for just 11,- euros, half a litre of red wine and water included.
Favorite Dish: I had scallops as a 1st course, the a perch as a second course and some icecream as desert. All over the restaurant you will find some exhibits about the Camino and there is also 1 table with a great view of the church.
I had a great dinner in this restaurant, where I also spent the night in a private room.
This place was also one of the quite few albergues, where you could get breakfast at least after 0800am and they also a good choice of snacks to take away, as you never know, when you will find the next supermarket !
Favorite Dish: I had a pilgrim-dinner with 3 courses, half a litre of wine and a bottle of water included for just 9,90 Euros.
Breakfast was 3 euros for toasted white ordinary bread (NO toast-bread) and coffee.
This restaurant is located just close to the cathedral, on an ancient building looking at its eastern side.
Modern interior and nice service. They offer mainly crpese (salad and sweet) and omelettes, but you can also find other interesting choices like a good cheese plate I got
I was really hungry when I passed by this restaurant and I ordered the Peregrino-menu that was 12 euros with a bottle of red wine and water included.
The lady told me that the 1st course is the buffet of cold and warm dishes and when I had my choice she will come again and take my order for the maincourse....
Favorite Dish: I ate a lot of that buffet and then I was not able to eat any more maincourse. Instead I had also a desert from that buffet and ordered an espresso and at the end I was really surprised to see, that they did not charge me the full pilgrim-menu, but just 10 euros including the espresso.
