Tourist Offices.

by pfsmalo

One good thing to know about Spains many tourist offices, apart from all the literature that they have is the fact that they are allowed to contact hotels and book them for you without any charge whatsoever. Which is very handy when you arrive in a town you don't know, without somewhere to stay, and the offices will always help you out.

Salamanca

by traveldave

One of Spain's most important university towns, Salamanca is in the province of Castile-León, and has been a center of learning for over 3,200 years. Salamanca's prestigious university was founded in 1218, and it soon became the equal of universities in Oxford and Bologna. Salamanca was beseiged by Hannibal in 220 B.C., and under Roman rule, the city was an important staging post on the Ruta de la Plata ("Silver Route") from mines in northern Spain to population centers in the south. Many consider Salamanca's Plaza Mayor (pictured here) to be the most magnificent in Spain. The square was designed in 1729 by the architect José Benito de Churriguera. Nowadays, fashionable boutiques and cafes line the perimeter, making the Plaza Mayor a popular place to relax and enjoy the ambiance.

Seville

by traveldave

The Moors ruled Spain from 710 A.D. to 1492, and their capital was located at Córdoba. In the eleventh century, the Moorish caliphate collapsed into about 30 feuding party states. In 1086, the Almoravids, a tribal group from North Africa, invaded the region and established some control. Then in the twelfth century, the Almohads, another tribal group from Morocco, ousted the Almoravids and designated Seville as their capital. During the reign of the Almohads, many oppulent Moorish-style palaces and gardens were constructed in the city. Some of these buildings, such as The Giralda, the Alcázar of Seville, and the Murillo Gardens still exist and help to give Seville its unique character. After the reconquest in 1492, when the Christian Spanish kings ousted the Moors, Seville became one of the country's most affluent cities. Because it was Spain's premier port (ships were able to travel up...

Ávila

by traveldave

Located about 70 miles (113 kilometers) northwest of Madrid, and at an altitude of 3,711 feet (1,131 meters), Ávila is the highest provincial capital in Spain. And with a population of less than 60,000, it is one of the smallest provincial capitals in the country. Ávila is noted for having the largest number of Romanesque and Gothic churches in Spain in relation to the number of inhabitants.Legend has it that Hercules founded the city, but it was first settled in about the fifth century B.C. by the Vettones, a Celtic tribe that inhabited the Iberian Peninsula. The Vettones constructed a fortress on the crest of the highest hill in the area. They called their fortress Obila, meaning "High Mountain" in their language. Obila was later conquered by the Romans, who called the settlement Abila or Abela. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Ávila became a Visigoth stronghold. Muslim forces later...

Madrid

by traveldave

What is now Madrid began as a settlement established on the banks of the Manzanares River by a Celtic tribe in about the second century B.C. When the Roman Empire expanded to include the Iberian Peninsula, the Romans founded a new settlement on the site of the prior Celtic settlement that they called Matrice. Over the centuries, the name Matrice evolved into Madrid. As Rome's power declined, Madrid was conquered and ruled first by the Vandals and then by the Visigoths. In the seventh century, Madrid again fell to outside forces, this time the Muslim Moors. Under the Moors, Madrid began to become more of a true city. Prior to the Moorish era, Madrid had been ruled by different transient peoples with no interest in developing a permanent, viable city. After the Christians reconquered Spain in 1085, Madrid was integrated into the Kingdom of Castile. In 1188, it officially became a city,...

Córdoba

by traveldave

The city of Córdoba is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Spain. It has historic architecture and monuments from Roman, Moorish, and early Spanish periods. The city has the second-largest historic center in Europe, and is the largest urban area in the world declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.What is now Córdoba was first settled by early Iberians. The settlement came under Cathaginian control after they made an expansion northward across the Guadalquivir River. They called the settlement Kartuba, from kart-Juba, which means "city of Juba." In 206 B.C., the area was conquered by the Romans, and in 169 B.C. the Roman consul Marcus Claudius Marcellus founded a Roman colony alongside the existing Iberian settlement. The city became the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Ulterior Baetica. As the Roman Empire eventually declined, the Visigoths conquered Córdoba in the...

Churros.

by Maurizioago

Churros are fried dough pastry sticks snack normally eaten for breakfast; dipped in hot chocolate. You can find them in many cafes through Spain. Here's the recipe (serves 4-6 people). ¾ cup white flour. ¾ cup of water. ¼ cup butter. Pinch of salt. Sugar. 2 eggs beaten eggs. In a medium sauce pan bring the water to a boil with butter and salt. Add the flour and stir vigorously until it forms a smooth thick mixture. Remove from the heath and stir in the eggs until you have a thick paste. Place the mixture in a cake decorating tube with a large star tip and fry it in a large skillet until they turn golden brown. Sprinkle them with sugar while hot. The dough spiral should fry on both sides for less than a minute, until it gets slighlty crunchy.
