The Monarchy

by DanielF

Monarchy is definitely not the most democratic form of government, but it does sell well as a touristy asset. Despite the fact that he was appointed to the throne by the former dictator and that he had no scruples to jump over his father, the legitimate heir, the current Spanish King seems to be well liked by a majority of the population. His role as non-ruling monarch in leading the country towards a consolidated parliamentary democracy is particularly appreciated. At least, he receives a solid back-up from a majority of the media. Even if in recent times unfortunate circumstances where the king was involved have started to be aired, like when he shot dead a tame bear during a private hunting trip to Russia after the animal was plied with vodka, his aura of untouchability does not seem to have been eroded significantly. Furtehrmore, his love for guns and hunting had already put him into...

A rich historical legacy

by DanielF

Although it is primarily known for its beaches, Spain is extremely rich in art and monuments. Different cultures and peoples have left traces of their passage through Spain, resulting in a surprisingly varied artistic heritage. Only second to Italy in number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this priceless legacy gathers jewels from all periods since the Palaeolithic to the 20th century, including masterworks of the Roman and Muslim arts, as well as notable medieval cities, unique artistic manifestations, and outstanding scenic areas. Lately, a new wave of brilliant buildings, fostered by a constant economic growth in the last decades, has transformed the country into a Mecca for contemporary architecture aficionados. The most celebrated world architects have left signature buildings in different Spanish cities, helping so to attract tourists to some rather forgotten areas so far. Star...

Cook for Yourself While Staying at the Beach!

by Birgie

As much as I love Spain, I have to say that many restaurants we tried, particularly on the Costa del Sol at the beach were...quite...awful! I came back convinced without a doubt that I could open up a restaurant there with no experience in restauranteuring and have the best restaurant in town. I do not get it. I would be EMBARASSED to serve the kind of things they typically give you. Embarassed because most places make it painfully obvious they don't give a damn about anything but your money. One place gave us a tiny crepe on a plate with a scant smear of chocolate on it for $6.50. My daughter was asking me, "Is this chocolate? Is it? Because I don't taste any chocolate, look!" We opened it up and there was some there but we couldn't taste it! Other places just gave the same out menu the dozens of other places did: mediocre pizza, fries, grilled cheese sandwiches, bocadillos on stale...

Seville

by traveldave

The Moors ruled Spain from 710 A.D. to 1492, and their capital was located at Cordoba. In the eleventh century, the Moorish caliphate collapsed into about 30 feuding party states. In 1086, the Almoravids, a tribal group from North Africa, invaded the region and established some control. Then in the twelfth century, the Almohads, another tribal group from Morocco, ousted the Almoravids and designated Seville as their capital. During the reign of the Almohads, many oppulent Moorish-style palaces and gardens were constructed in the city. Some of these buildings, such as La Giralda, the Alcázar, and the Jardínes de Murillo still exist and help to give Seville its unique character. After the Reconquest in 1492, when the Christian Spanish kings ousted the Moors, Seville became one of the country's most affluent cities. Because it was Spain's premier port (ships were able to travel up the...

Madrid

by traveldave

Due to its central location on the Iberian Peninsula, King Felipe II established his permanent capital at Madrid in 1561. As the new capital, Madrid became the most important city in Spain. Within four decades, its population increased from 20,000 to 85,000 as merchants, artisans, soldiers, and others moved there to be close to the center of power.Under the Habsburg Dynasty, the city acquired many of its most notable buildings, including Plaza Mayor and the palace at El Retiro. At the same time, Madrid became one of Europe's leading centers of the arts, attracting such writers and artists as Miguel de Cervantes, Diego Velázquez, and Bartolomé Murillo.During its history, Madrid has seen several royal dynasties, interim republics, a bloody civil war, a dictatorship, and democracy. Madrid has come through its sometimes troubled past as one of the most beautiful and cultured cities in...

Temporary internet in Spain

by melgashop

Don't do what they say because those companies will make you stay with them for 1 year or more. I'm in the same situation as you and I've made it differently:- Unlock your internet dongle and when you arrive in Spain go to a "The Phone House" shop or "Carrefour" and buy a Yoigo SIM card, then you'll have unlimited access to internet for just €1,39 per day. The speed is quite slow, but if you use it for instant messaging or surf the internet it's ok. Check their website www.yoigo.comAnd if you use them you won't need to sign a contract, you just have to pop-up your card and you're ready to surf with it. Other option is Simyo www.simyo.com, it's cheaper but you just have 100MB per day to use. Any question, just ask.

Tapas, Flamenco and the sea

by venenorojo

What else do I need to be happy? (Well, perhaps a bit of salsa y amor...)I love Spain. I love their food, their way to live, their way to be open for new unknown people. Up till now there are three cities which I fell in love with... Barcelona (it was three times there), Madrid (I definetely will be there more times) and Alicante.Barcelona is just impresionante with its wonderful buildings, the interesting Las Ramblas, the beautiful Parque Guell and La Sagrada Familia. Madrid? Olé... I have been in the house of the Flamenco world, the well-known "Amor de Díos", the most known Flamenco Dance School in the world, I guess. As well as you can go out there every night - but be prepared to walk a lot. The taxi drivers of Madrid are not the nicest ones... Alicante? A wonderful town at the sea where I spent time although it hasn't been planned. An incredible architecture and nice old people...

Córdoba

by traveldave

The city of Córdoba was conquered by the Romans in 152 B.C., and was made the capital of their Baetic Province. From the sixth to the eighth centuries, the city was ruled by the Visigoths, and at the beginning of the eighth century, was taken over by the Moors. Under the Caliphate of Abd-al-Rahman, Córdoba became the capital of Moorish Spain. The Moors transformed Córdoba into Europe's most civilized city, with one of the world's great universities, numerous schools of philosophy and medicine, 3,000 mosques, and 300 public baths. Nowadays, there are buildings and monuments representing each of the civilizations that once had control over Córdoba.
