Cathedral in Cuenca

by deecat

The Gothic Cathedral in Cuenca really is amazing. First of all, it is absolutely gorgeous on the outside...then, when you step inside, you are awed by the splendor of the very life-like statues, marvelous stained glass windows, and all the massive architectural elements. There are individual paintings of all the followers of Christ. A particularly wonderful set of statues are the ones which depict the story of a follower hitting a Roman soldier, and Christ stopping him. The pictures:1. The exterior of the Cuenca Cathedral (its facade)2. An elderly local woman all dressed in black who is walking up the stairs to enter the church.3. Inside church with Stained Glass Windows4. Statues which depict the story of a Soldier being hit and of Jesus stopping it.5. Another view of the Inside of the CathedralThis moment in time when we visited Cuenca Cathedral remains with me still as it haunts my...

"Holy Toledo!" Now I Understand

by deecat

I never understood the American term, "Holy Toledo!" until I went to Spain and visited the city of Toledo and its Cathedral. This massive cathedral is a site to behold. Built on this site starting in 1226, it took three centuries to complete it! That explains why there are mixed styles. Interior work such as Plateresque and Mudejar show the Spanish influence; the exterior that is French Gothic (note the flying buttressess) reflects the French influence. There is also a Renaissance ironwork grille on the Capilla Mozarabe. The altarpiece is made of marble, bronze, and jasper and was done by Narciso Tome: it is Baroque so we noticed it among the mainly Gothic interior. The ceiling is mudejar (not often found in Toledo). What I liked best (although I liked all of it) was the High Altar Reredos. It has scenes from Christ's life and is quite ornate.Another part of the interior that was unique was...

Ávila

by traveldave

Located about 70 miles (113 kilometers) northwest of Madrid, and at an altitude of 3,710 feet (1,131 meters), Ávila is the highest city in Spain. Legend has it that Hercules founded the city, but it was probably first settled by Celts. In 1090, King Alfonso VI reclaimed the city from the Moors and began constructing Ávila's trademark fortifications. The city's protective walls (pictured here) are 33 feet (ten meters) high, ten feet (three meters) thick, and encircle the old city for over one mile (1.6 kilometers) in circumference. There are 88 round towers and nine fortified entrances.

Travelling with a Tour Group - Contiki

by tamies

Spain was beautiful, but the problem was being with a tour group. On the brochure it said we had 2 days in ceratin places, but that did not take into account the time it took to get to each one. For example, we had 2 days in Barcelona, but the ferry from Ibizia took 8 hours so we did not get there till 11:00. We actually only had 4 hours during the day there since many people left early the next day. Plus, our hotel was by the airport and not close to the Robles. We were able to take a bus and take the underground for around 3 Euros, but that was Friday night, during the week you would have had to take a taxi. Tours are nice if you are travelling alone, but you don't get to stay in the places you like and you are stuck with your tour group and what they want to do. If you are travelling with someone, I would suggest planning your trip on your own, that way you can spend more time in the...

do your reading first

by MrBill

If you're like me you like to read up on a place before you visit it. I am a fan of historical novels as well. Two of the authors that I associate with Spain are Ernest Hemingway, Death in the Afternoon, For Whom the Bells Toll and Fiesta (The Sun Also Rises) as well as James Michener, Iberia and The Drifters. So of course when I was in Spain, I visited Pamplona, and stayed in Hemingway's favorite, La Perla Hotel. It was not during fiesta (thank goodness), but in August. Much nicer to see the city while it is not being held hostage to drunken, foreign hoardes. I really enjoyed Pamplona and the surrounding countryside of the Basque country and up along the Atlantic coasts. I took many wonderful photos, but they were all on film and so far I have not had them digitalized yet. My other author, James Michener was also a long-time resident and frequent visitor to Spain. His book The Drifters...

Pineda de Mar

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Pineda de Mar - the resort city located in 57 km from the capital of Catalonia. Spacious beaches and set of an open-air cafe allow to combine successfully pleasure by the sun and the sea with calmness of evening. In the middle of the last century there were first residences of rich inhabitants of Barcelona, and also the first hotels for solvent Europeans. For last decades when development of sphere of tourism in Spain has got especially active character, ancient seaside cities have started to turn to the prospering resort centers with a wide network of modern hotels and entertaining complexes. Landscapes of Costa del Maresmeis first of all multikilometer sandy beaches from the silvery sand, washed by azure waves of Mediterranean sea. The soft sea climate of this province surrounded by mountain ridges is remarkable as well.

The basil got the modern shape in the XVIII century according to the project of the architect Rodriguez. The towers decorated by a multi-colored tile appeared in the beginning of the XX century.

Madrid

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Modern Madrid is one of the youngest cities of Spain. It has got its modern appearance with the result of significant reorganizations of XVII-th and XIX-th centuries. That is why its lay-out is regular and clear. The monument to Miguel Servantes is installed on Plaza de Espana. This monument became the same symbol of Madrid, as well as the she-bear at Puerta del Sol. The monument represents a huge obelisk on the coast of the reservoir. The figure of the writer is located at bottom of the obelisk. You can see Don Kihot and Sancho Pansa below the obelisk.
