A Big Red X Marks the Sheep

by deecat

While driving from Cardona to Vic, we saw sheep everywhere. They were sometimes in the roads, and so we had to stop to avoid hurting them. On this two-lane road, we saw several sheep with some kind of marking on them. We were too far away to tell what it was exactly. Therefore, Allan stopped the car and went up to the wire fence to get a closer look. One of the sheep had a big red X on his back.We thought that it meant that he would be killed. Oh, no...we worried and worried about the poor sheep.Later on, we asked the locals, and they told us that he was marked to be sheared. Thank Goodness!

Guadalajara: Surprisingly Lovely Town

by deecat

We had no great expectations when we chose Guadalajara because it was close to the Madrid airport where we were to go early the next morning. The hotel was quaint and immaculate; the convent and church across the street were beautiful; it was a sunny (80 degrees outside) day; the post office was next door and quite efficient for our purpose. The Plaza Mayor was lovely; the town Library had unique architecture; and we were able to see the wonderful pre-Easter ceremony. What did we learn here? We learned not to judge something before you know about it personally. The picture:Top: Unique architecture of town LibraryBottom: Fountain in center of Plaza MayorIt's also a very nice town to shop in because it is not a tourist town. The locals are helpful and friendly. All in all, we really enjoyed our last night in Spain in Guadalajara!

The lake of Banyoles.

by Maurizioago

This was the rowing location for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. This lake is around 2,000 m. by 100 m. long. Ther are several huts around it; I don't know what they are for. From the lake area you can go to Porqueres by a foothpath. Here you could visit the Romanesque church of Santa Maria. You can go to Banyoles by direct bus from Girona or from Besalù.

The Museo de Salamanca

by Paul2001

The Museo de Salamanca is essentially the city's Fine Art Museum. It is located in a very fine Plateresque style building that was built in the late 15th century. The collection covers Spanish art from the 15th century to the 20th century however there are few outstanding works here. Although the building is noteworthy unless you a sincere appreciator of Spanish painting, I very much doubt that you will enjoy your visit here. The Museo de Salamanca is located just west of the the University. The admission price is a cheap 1.50 Euros so if you still want to explore then it is affordable. The musuem is closed on Monday

Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada

by the___gecko

A great way to spend a few days is to trek from the villages of the Alpujarras valley through the mountain range of the Sierra nevada. The towns are build almost like someone has taken a giant blob of clay and just molded the towns out like doing pottery. The Sierra Nevada is a rugged mountain range, not as beautiful as the Swiss Alps but worth trekking through from town to town. Absolutely beautiful.

Sierra Nevada - La Veleta

by ant1606

The Sierra Nevada and Alpujarra ranges lie east of Granada. Getaway from the city summer heat takes about 30 minutes or more on the nicely paved road leading to the winter sports resort and village of Sierra Nevada, located at about 2,500 m elevation. From here, the banned road would proceed further near Pico de Veleta, topping 3,394 m elevation and only second to the Mulhacen in the whole Iberic peninsula. Too bad time on our side did not allow to take a hike up there, we just enjoyed the impressive bird's eye views over Andalucia.

Sierra de Espuña

by ant1606

Quiet protected area located west of Murcia. The natural park is immersed in pinetree populations and characterized by gulches, gullies and ravines carved out of the soft sandstone and limestone formations. We chose the place for a stopover on the road and it was a pleasant stay as the campsite is at a good elevation to escape the summer heat. There are several trekking and mountain biking possibilities but I guess it would be too hot for attempts during summer months. The only campsite within the park provides a good, reasonably priced stay and a friendly management.

Ride to the top of the mountain of Montserrat!

by Minka007

Welcome to Montserrat!!! Montserrat is a mountain range 60 Km northwest of Barcelona. It is a unique natural environment and a religious center. The mountain of Montserrat was already a religious and pilgrimage center thousands of years ago. The history of the Catholic temples begins in the 9th century, when the Catholic troops conquered these lands to the Muslims, the "Sarrains". In the 10th century there were already four Catholic Hermitages in the mountain.

The Museo Provincial in Avila

by Paul2001

I entered this museum as a time killer. It was something to do late in the day. In fact the museum turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Actually I should not have been so shocked because this museum does explore both the rich history of Avila and the cultural aspects of the province. The Museo Provincial is housed in a wonderful 16th century mansion where the cathedral deans habitated. The museum looks both at the artistic history of the region with fine displays of Romanesque statues and carvings of religious significance such as a triptyph depicting the life of Jesus. There are also good exhibits about agricultural life in the region with displays of farming equipment and traditional rural costumes. This museums attempts to cover everything about Avila's past so there is naturally an exhibit with archaeological artifacts. In hindsight, I thought that this was one of the best...

Valley of the Fallen

by ellsasha

El Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen) has what can best be described as a basilica hewn out of a stone ridge. It is located outside of Madrid in Cuelgamuros in the Guadarrama Valley and General Franco had this monument built as his final resting place. It is said that over 50,000 dead from the Spanish Civil War are buried in the walls of the basilica. After the war it was meant to commemorate both the fallen from the Nationalist side as well as the Republican side (a kind of reconciliation) but the bias seems to be towards the Nationalists - hundreds of Republicans died because as prisoners they were forced to excavate the cavern. Irrespective of one’s political feelings, the huge cavern (basilica) is breathtaking as a structure, and the view from the large plaza in front of the main entrance is impressive. There is a huge cross (Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caidos) on top of the...
