Laza

by bijo69

The way to Laza the next day offered some really beautiful views, like the one on the pic. As you can see, the water level of the reservoir is quite low. It's a very dry year in Spain...Laza itself is quite a modern village. The refugio there is new, well equipped and even free of charge! You have to register with the police and they even offered us to drive to the refugio.

A Gudina

by bijo69

The destination of the next day was A Gudina, a bit over 30km away. After walking for a while we encountered a little obstacle, a bridge over a stream was demolished: after contemplating for a moment we decide to walk up to the street and continue along the road until the Galician border. No more problems (except for my growing blisters) on the way and we reached the refugio in A Gudina in the afternoon. The refugio was free this time had guarded by a guy who really was serious about his task: the berth was asigned to you and he should us how to clean the bathroom etc.

Puebla de Sanabria

by bijo69

Puebla de Sanabria is a beautiful little town up on a hill overlooking the Rio Tera. There's a castillo from the 15th century which you can visit on weekends or when tourgroups are in town.Meet up with Rob (into-thin-air) here to join him on his epic walk from Sevilla to Santiago de Compostella. Great start for me as I overslept on the first day! Poor Rob... But finally I made it out of bed and we started our walk towards Lubian, some 35km away.

The Provincial Museum in Caceres

by Paul2001

The Provincial Archeological Museum, located in the Old Quarter of Caceres, was one of my more pleasant surprises while touring Spain. I was expecting yet another tedious regional museum displaying local minor artifacts. Instead I was welcomed by a pretty decent collection of exhibits. The museum also has good exhibits on Roman and pre-Roman artifacts that I found interesting. The museum is located in two 15th century mansions that in themselves are very interesting.

Hikking on the Costa Brava

by lostinparadies

There plenty of hikking walks all over the place and as the coastline belongs to the navy there are no privat beaches, so everybody has access to the sea. For example you can walk from Lloret de Mar to Blanes (15 km) without hitting a mainroad.

Toledo: the Oldest City in Spain

The Iglesia de Santo Tomé in Toledo

by Paul2001

The Iglesia de Santo Tomé located in the lovely city of Toledo is a small church that would otherwise be easily overlooked but for the fact that it is home of the most famous painting in Spain outside of Madrid. The painting is El Greco's "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz". This one of the that great masters most important works and has to be seen if you are visiting Toledo. "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz" depicts the funeral of the Count of Orgaz as he is being lowered into his tomb. Flanking the body of the count are St. Augustine and St. Stephen. Behind them is an array of onlookers, none of whom are actually identified but is presumed to be famed contemporaries of the count. The painting is particularly rich in colours and is famous for it portraits. It is probably my favourite of El Greco's paintings. The church is located in the Jewish Quarter of Toledo. Although it is easy pass...
