Things to Do

Picos de Europa - Have a break on the road.

Picos de Europa - Have a break on the road., Picos de Europa

pfsmalo Says:  As you pass through this lovely region there are some little villages, or mountain passes to make a break from the driving and stretch your legs.

Picos de Europa - Stop in Cangas de Onis.

Picos de Europa - Stop in Cangas de Onis., Picos de Europa

pfsmalo Says:  Cangas is a good place to stop, not just to look around, but to stock up on any food etc. you'll need for that pick-nick in the mountains. It's a good centre also for anyone that wants to try out an extreme sport, plenty of outfitters here. A few things to see as well,...

Dramatic Peaks

Dramatic Peaks, Picos de Europa

karenincalifornia Says:  The highest peaks of Picos de Europa reach 2570 meters (almost 8500 feet), which might not sound like a really big deal, but consider that they are only 20 km from the sea. They are rugged, glacially carved, and very steep. We didn't climb these highest peaks you see in this...

Like climbing stairs, just about

Like climbing stairs, just about, Picos de Europa

karenincalifornia Says:  Most of the trail is rocky and steep. Good hiking boots are a must. This picture shows the typical terrain for much of the hike.

Hike from Lago Ercina

Hike from Lago Ercina, Picos de Europa

karenincalifornia Says:  Our hike in the beautiful Picos de Europa started at Lago Ercina, a pretty glacial lake sitting at an elevation of 4500 feet. From Covadanga, head up the mountain. Fairly soon, the road becomes quite narrow. Follow this road and its switchbacks for about 20-30 minutes. Try...

The Cares River Route

The Cares River Route, Picos de Europa

Neit Says:  The route that breaks through the Cares gorges is the most spectacular of Asturias. Water falls and runs all around. The route starts in Posada de Valdeón (21 km), but people normally start in Caín and finish in Poncebos (12 km). In both cases it is recommended to have a car...

Vultures

Vultures, Picos de Europa

Neit Says:  It is possible that you see vultures while you stay in Picos. They are impressive and marvellous.

Naranjo de Bulnes.

Naranjo de Bulnes., Picos de Europa

Neit Says:  Naranjo de Bulnes o Pico Urriellu is one of the most famous mountains of Spain. It can be seen perfectly from Caín town, like in the photo.

Warnings Or Dangers

Zero visibility

Zero visibility, Picos de Europa

karenincalifornia Says:  Because the Picos are so close to the ocean, humidity is relatively high, and the peaks suddenly jut out from sea level, when the clouds move in, they create fog - very dense fog. If you can, try to get a weather report before you start out on a hike. We did from our inn...

Watch your step

Watch your step, Picos de Europa

karenincalifornia Says:  The Picos are used heavily for grazing so odds are you'll come across many cows and some horses. The Asturian livestock aren't scary, per se, but do watch where you step. If you don't, you're liable to land in a cow pie at some point.

Off The Beaten Path

Living in the middle of the mountain

Living in the middle of the mountain, Picos de Europa

Neit Says:  It is not in the photograph, but near this nice donkey it was a little stone house (4-5 km from any kind of car road or town). In this house it was an old man (probably a sheperd) sitting near a chimney. Wow It has to be a really different kind of life, probably lonely...

Sports & Outdoors

Snowy Picos

freya_heaven Says:  The Picos De Europa is usually known for hiking, walking, climbing, caving to name a few sports of the area. Being there in the winter we also saw skiers, both downhill & cross country. Bring it with you

Exploring Picos de Europa

Exploring Picos de Europa, Picos de Europa

micas_pt Says:  Picos de Europa is “surrounded” by paved road, making it possible to encircle the park by car. However, this paved road is long and winding and it won’t only be a daytrip for sure. Also, there are a few paved roads that allow visitors to reach some must see points in Picos...

National Park

National Park, Picos de Europa

micas_pt Says:  Picos de Europa is an amazing set of mountains and valleys, which met and surpassed my growing expectations about the place. It stretches for several autonomous regions – Asturies, Castilla y Léon and Cantabria – and the landscape seems to “evolve” from stony and sterile...

Mountain Goats

Mountain Goats, Picos de Europa

Neit Says:  Picos de Europa is plenty of animals. One of them are mountain goats, which can be seen easily in the mountain roads.
