Sideria Casa Parrondo: Tapas, Northern Spain style!

by maestrakaty

This is a wonderfully fun place to go for tapas or out at night. The style of food and drink is of Asturias in the northern part of Spain - distinct and delicious from the other tapas you've enjoyed! The best part is the cider, which your waiter will hold high and let streaming into your glass, apparently to release the cider's true flavor. He'll teach you to pour it yourself if you ask. Good food; I ate there in my starving student days and ordered a sausage or tortilla espanola (always delicious and this time with an Asturian twist.) Great typical-Spanish-tapas-bar ambience with hams and memorabilia crowding the walls and ceiling. My favorite restaurant in Madrid!

Main Buffet Restaurant, Montserrat Mountains: Delicious free Catalunya lunch with package

by hopang

Tot Montserrat package which cost 31.00 euros per person (August 2006 price) includes return FGC train rides between the city of Barcelona and Montserrat Aeri Station, return Aeri cable car rides between Montserrat Aeri Station and the monastery, furnicular rides to Saint Jerome and Holy Grotto, free entrance to Montserrat Museum, audio visual display and a free Catalunya self-service lunch at the main buffet restaurant in the resort. The free lunch includes a small bottle of local beer and mineral water. You can choose three different dishes from the mainly Catalunya cuisines at the counter including the well-prepared mouth-watering dessert. Of course you can add more dishes by paying extra if you think that the food is not enough for you. The food is reasonably delicious, it has to be said. Mainly Catalunya cuisines including the superb mouth-watering dessert which we liked it very...

Don't Leave Without Trying Iberian Ham

by DanielF

Jamon Ibérico — or Iberian ham — is the flagship of the heavenly products from the locally grown Iberian pigs. Too bad for strict vegetarians and followers of religions who forbid the consumption of pork products, as this is one of those rare excellent foods where flavour and taste combine in such a sublime manner that the sensorial experience they prompt is beyond any description. The bad news is that jamón ibérico is one of the priciest meats in the world and, sadly, things can only get worse: after some health issues have been solved, Iberian ham is now being exported all throughout the world and, apparently, by now it has already become the hottest European delicacy in the hippest venues of Tokyo and other groovy world cities. As demand increases, prices can only be expected to go up and up, as the production will remain limited. The elaboration process of the best variety of this...

The Tapas Philosphy

by DanielF

Tapas have become one of the most recognisable features of the Spanish cuisine. Actually, tapas have suffered a big evolution, if not a revolution, and have even become popular in Spanish restaurants outside of Spain. However, few foreigners get the tapas idea right. In its origins, tapas were just a small appetizer offered with the aperitif, just before lunch. Today, they are much more than that. Tapas are no longer an accessory for an alcoholic drink, but a culinary creation in its own right, sometimes described as haute cuisine in miniature. In the last years, people have started to eat a combination of tapas that can substitute a whole meal. For solid tapas aficionados, this constitutes a self-designed menu that is defined by its lack of rituals and formalities - you usually eat your tapas standing at the bar - and, above all, by the itinerancy - you hop from bar to bar picking your...

Mediterranean diet

by DanielF

Spaniards refer to their own fare as the Mediterranean diet and consider it to be one of the key factors for having one of the longest life expectancies in the world. This Mediterranean diet is supposed to rely mainly on fresh vegetables and fish, with a lesser consumption of meats and saturated fats. In reality, though, you will realize that there is a striking variety in the different regional cuisines, all of them based on an unparalleled panoply of fresh locally produced ingredients, but usually with tempting suggestions which are far from what you would call a healthy, light salad or soup. And also often with some traditional recipes based on creative ingredients, only apt for the most courageous visitors. As varied as this Mediterranean diet may be, there is a common feature in all the Spanish cuisine: the mind-boggling amount of olive oil most dishes are served with. Spaniards will...

Wine tasting

by DanielF

Spain is no new comer in the world of oenology. With a perfect environment for wine growing, it is actually the third largest producer in the world. Moreover, the last decades have seen a tremendous development of high quality producing techniques that has translated in excellent local vintages to accompany food anywhere you are in Spain. The wealth of native grape varieties is amazing, although almost all the production comes from only 20 kinds of grapes, the tempranillo being the most widespread for red wines. Garnacha, airén, palomino, macabeo, xarel•lo and monastrell are some of the other most popular varieties. In recent years, the use of international varieties such as cabernet-saubignon and chardonnay has been increased, both in blends and in varietal forms.According to the amount of aging the wine has received, Spanish wine is classified into crianza, reserva and gran reserva....

The Variety of Spanish Cuisine

by DanielF

Like all around Mediterranean Europe, food is a religion in Spain. Spaniards love their cuisine and wax lyrical about their local specialities, even if most of them are simple and plain food that can hardly be described as the cutting edge of haute cuisine, but rely on the high quality of the local ingredients employed and the expertise passed through generations. Prices have risen considerably in the last years, but they are still below the average in other Western European countries.Food in Spain is as varied as its landscapes. My advice is to be adventurous and go always for the local specialities, even if the definition of edible is here much larger than in other cultures. From the scrumptious Galician seafood to the rice recipes of the Valencia region and the inimitable range of products obtained from the Iberian pork in Western Spain, there is a whole gastronomic universe for you...

Sula: Great Jamón and Wine Selection

by cheery_witt

I love this restaurant for the environment, for the food, for the wine, for the jamón.... The restaurant is connected to Joselito (jamones Joselito...the "premium" jamon in Spain) and Quique Dacosta (chef, famous for his restaurant in Valencia).Expect to spend between 35 and 70 Euros per person. Well worth it for a nice evening out.SULA - www.sula.esCalle Jorge Juan, 33MadridCheers and happy eating! I go here just about every time I travel through Madrid. The dishes that I like the best are the tempura (with artichokes, avocado and other not-so-traditionally "tempura" vegetables), and the pulpo a la gallega. The wine selection is amazing, with over 500 types. And the jamón is great.

Tropicana: Chiringuitos!!!

by Birgie

A local recommended this chiringuito to me on the beach in Malaga City. The prices were decent and the food was really good, plus it's just fun to sit by the beach sip on a cold drink after a walk down the paseo martimo and watch the guy cooking in the funky boat grill thing they use at chiringuitos to cook some of the fish and seafood. we had grilled red snapper, deep fried eggplant, grilled prawns in garlic oil, salad, loads of fries and chicken kebab.

Heladeria Casma: Ice Cream Sundaes in Zahara de los Atunes

by Birgie

This ice cream, snack bar was named after a nearby military base, Casma. I know that because they were playing a video about the origins of the restaurant on the t.v. nearby our table! All the big sundaes are named after geographic features around Zahara de los Atunes.
