Annie, Make sure you have a valid European Health Card (previously known as the E111 card) before you go, it entitles you to free emergency medical treatment in the public health system of all 27 EU countries. Spanish hospitals are generally of a very high standard and most will have staff who speak English, especially in busy tourist areas like the Costa del Sol, etc. Pharmacies are usually very efficient and helpful too. Drugs are much cheaper in Spain than in Ireland, not sure about the UK, but you might want to bring along prescriptions for any medications that you use regularly and stock up while you are there. Hope this helps, Anne Marie Theme: Other

Winery's full name: Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez Tinto Pesquera, S:L.
The best red wine I have ever had was this one: Pesquera. Tinto Cosecha 1993. This wine is from the Ribera del Duero to the west in Spain, just near the Portugese border. Don't miss this wine of a good year if you want to bring a bottle home or simply have a fantastic drink here and now with your food...
Varies with year and quality - several versions. The price is an indication of the quality acording to this area's norms (Duero). Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkOther Contact: Pesquera De Duero, Valladolid

Zara is a Spanish retailer of women & men's clothing, and there are branches everywhere. They carry the latest fashions, at affordable prices--slightly more expensive than H&M, but still less expensive than The Gap. The quality is higher than The Gap too. There are a couple of stores right here in the US as well.
I bought a really cute white blazer for US$38. I saw a similar one at The Gap for $68, and the fabric is inferior. Leave a Comment Theme: Women's ClothesDirections: From Puerto del Sol (Metro Sol) head north up Calle Montera, Tetuan, or Carmen or West down Calle Arenal.Website: www.zara.com

Fashion design in Spain has, for many years, been considered too lackluster to play in the same level as Paris, Milan or even London. Moreover, many of its most prominent designers, such as Balenciaga, have developed their career in the fashion meccas rather in their home country. At the grand brand level, Spanish fashion has not taken gigantic steps yet, but the country has indeed achieved a global presence during the last decades in High Street Fashion. Zara, in particular, but also Mango, Bershka, Camper and many others have managed to offer a catwalk inspired fashion for very affordable prices, with a reasonable quality and within weeks since the trends are revealed in the most glamourous fashion shows. Inditex, the corporation which owns most of these fast-fashion chains, based in Galicia, is owned by a self-made man who started with a small atelier in his own home and has become the country's richest person and one of the most important tycoons worldwide. In this era of globalization, Zara and Mango stores have become so ubiquitous that it hardly makes sense to shop there in Spain. Yet, prices tend to be here lower than in other countries and the choice is often larger. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

The markets had everything from typical tourist crap to some very authentic and unique gift ideas. Some of my prized finds...a bottle of olive oil (my Dad loves the stuff!:) and a dress. I found cloth shopping a little harder because I am not used to Euro sizing but half the fun was having to try everything on!! The cheapest thing I saw in Spain had to be the sarongs and swim suits. Because I do not live next to a ocean, these things are not "hot" items so you pay more! The shopping was great in Spain, bring an extra bag! Leave a Comment Theme: Women's Clothes

Fruit stall in the Mercat Central de València by DanielF In spite of the ever growing success of pre-cooked deep-frozen foods, the average Spaniard still knows how and what to buy in the market; and how to cook at home on an everyday basis. Indeed, buying in traditional market halls is still a daily task for many Spaniards. Prices are not the lowest, but the high quality and the personalised service still provide a good value for money. Food matters are taken seriously by Spaniards and, for that reason, it is not odd that most of the local market halls are located in historical buildings in prominent places of the city. They are usually amazing pieces of architecture where the food items are carefully and colourfully displayed, so even if one does not need to buy any food, a visit to Some of the best known market halls in Spain, like the Boqueria in Barcelona or the Mercat Central in Valencia will still be rewarding. If you do decide to buy some food and have a possibility to cook, do not hesitate to ask for recipe advice for whatever you are buying. The grocer will tell you exactly how to make the best gazpacho with those juicy tomatoes, the fishmonger will enthusiastically explain how best to cook his cod a la vizcaína… and they all love to tell you. Famous Tetilla cheese from Galicia by puerto_lover Most food shops especially in main airports will have a good range of delicious Spanish cheese. I personally love the Manchego cheese that comes from south central Spain (just below Madrid) mainly from the LA MANCHA region. Made from sheep's milk, it is often served beautifully sliced as a tasty 'tapa' along with perhaps some fine Jamon. Not cheap to buy but worth it. However there are good and bad Manchegos just like wines. One cheese that may appeal to those who like soft creamy almost spreadable cheese with no harsh taste, is the famous cheese from GALICIA in northern Spain called TETILLA. Queixo de Tetilla in local Galician tongue. Made from the cow's milk in Galicia where the grasses are green and the cows content. My picture is of a cheese I purchased at Madrid airport. I paid around €11 for it but if you ever go to Galicia you will surely find plenty. My photo seems to be difficult to turn around. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and Drink

From inside art of the Alhambra, Granada by blint The most common places to buy good wine is actually in supermarkets. Off Licences (or wine stores) aren't common in Spain. If they do exsist they mainly sell Whisky/Whiskey for drinking on the streets/round you mates house on a Friday or Saturday!
Faustino Vll: A rioja (red wine) which will only set you back 4-5 euros. Sangre de Toros: Another fantastic Rioja which will again only set you back around 3.50-5 euros. Cune: Yet another great rioja which will set you back about 5 or 6 euros. Mil Flores: A rioja made with flowers which will set you back only 5 euros. You may even find little flowers floating around the bottom of the bottle if you are lucky! Don't be put off by the idea it's really good. Faustino V is a really lovely wine though is more expensive. Not expensive for the quality! In Spain you can even buy a good rioja foras little as 2 euros!!!! I promise whatever you buy it will taste a thousand times better than cheap wine in Bitain!! If you don't like Spanish wine then bad luck because it is really difficult to get anything else here!!!
