 | Spain Things To Do | Tips 371 - 380 of 1345 | | The Plaza Mayor has been Madrid's main square since the seventeenth century. It has been the venue for coronations, executions, and even bullfights. Nowadays, though, it is a great place to have a drink at an outdoor cafe and relax after exploring Madrid. There are shops, cafes, and restaurants around the perimeter, and the crowds offer the opportunity to people-watch. Leave a Comment Directions: The Plaza Mayor is just off Calle Mayor, one of Madrid's major east-west thoroughfares.

The Puerta del Puente is a triumphal arch that was originally part of the Moorish walls surrounding Cordoba, and which served as the main gateway into the city. The present version, however, is a copy which was commissioned by King Felipe II in 1572. The Puerta del Sol area is located in the heart of Madrid. Although nowadays the neighborhood is a little run down, at one time it was one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the city. During its heyday, the Puerta del Sol was the focus of such civic improvements as Madrid's first gas lighting (1830), city trams (1870), arc lamps (1906), and the first stretch of subway line (1919). In the early 1900s, many of Spain's writers and intellectuals hung out in the area's numerous outdoor cafes. Unfortunately, most of those cafes have been replaced by modern stores and fast food restaurants. Leave a Comment

The ancient name of Sitges was SUBUR, a roman name as they were the first in giving a name to the ibers that lived there in the past in the middle age there was a castle and an important church that still stands. Many houses are made with doors or windows belonging to middle age time, in the 18th and early 19th century was an opportunity for the people not rich in town and they all emigrated to the island of Cuba, and stay for many years, and a lot of them made there a lot of money and decided to return to Sitges, but very rich. They built magnificent houses and palaces to show off their power, but the fact is that there are dozens and dozens of artistic houses that now mostly are private hotels or guest houses. Perched on the hill overlooking the city of Granada lies the marvelous Alhambra palace. Yet another UNESCO site, its name probably derives from the Arabic meaning of "red castle" and it was mainly built from about AD 1250 to 1350 as a fortified citadel and housing structure to which subsequent additions were applied through the years. The outer red clay bricks give way to interiors featuring awesome ornamental reliefs, columns, arches, archways, colorful tiles, woodwork ceilings, gardens and fountains. It is here that Columbus was granted permission to sail for the Americas. A must see complex that requires a full day of dedication. At least in summer months, no more than 2,000 visitors per day are allowed. Most tickets appear to be sold through agencies, but probably as many as 800 per day are sold on-site at the ticket booth which opens by 8:00 AM. It is highly recommended to get in line by that time to secure tickets which allow the visitor to enter within a certain 60 minute window. Getting there late might result in being assigned a certain afternoon shift entrance time. Leave a Comment
