SUNDAYS -- FLEA MARKET IN ESTEPONA

by LoriPori

Sunday, March 25, 2001As we were looking for something to do on a cloudy, rainy Sunday afternoon, I found out that there was a flea market in ESTEPONA. It was quite a long drive, but it was all along the coast, going west from Torremolinos. Estepona is a small fishing village that conserved its original character extraordinarily well. There were several little restaurants that catered to the many British tourists that we saw there.

Cabildo Catedral de Segovia

by Paul2001

The Cabildo Catedral de Segovia is the last of the great Gothic cathedrals to be built in Spain. It was built between 1515 and 1568. The cathedral is full of important works of art such a numerous important paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries. There are also some very beautiful stained glass windows. The cloisters of the cathedral are particularly stunning. As seen from the Alcazar, the cathedral cuts a very impressive picture the way that it dominates the town and the surrounding countryside. It is free to enter the cathedral but it will cost you 1.80 Euros to see the adjoining museum and cloisters. The cathedral is open daily from 9am to 7pm.

RONDA -- TAJO GORGE

by LoriPori

Friday, March 23, 2001While in this amazing town, you can also visit Ronda's "Plaza de Toros" a very original bullring ( one of the oldest in Spain) made entirely of stone and built in 1784 in neoclassical style. There is also the Church of Santa Maria, the house of Don Bosco and the TAJO GORGE which is 660 feet deep. More impressive than its buildings however, is the spectacular location of this town. Hans and I were just in awe of this place and highly recommend it as a day trip.

RONDA -- PUENTE NUEVO

by LoriPori

Friday, March 23, 2001Hans and I drove up into the mountains as we wanted to visit the beautiful town of RONDA, which is located north-west of Marbella. We passed through the magnificent Ronda Mountain-range.Many civilizations formed its history. Several prehistoric findings around Ronda document this region's early history. The most important are CUEVA DE LA PILETA, a cave with splendid wall-paintings.Its most impressive monument is of course PUENTE NUEVO (the "new bridge") which spans over Tajo River in a height of almost 100 metres. It looks like an old Roman aquaduct, but it was built in the 18th century by architect Jose' Martin de Aldehuela.

The Barrio de Santa Cruz

by traveldave

A pleasant way to spend an afternoon or evening, is to walk the narrow, cobbled streets of Seville's Barrio de Santa Cruz. This neighborhood was formerly the Jewish quarter, and today is a fashionable area characterized by chic boutiques and outdoor cafes. It is easy to become temporarily lost in the barrio, but part of the fun of exploring the area is to wander without any plan and become lost. Besides, it is not too difficult eventually to find a way out.

The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

by traveldave

Cordoba's Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos was built in 1328 by the Moors, and was the residence of King Fernando and Queen Isabel during their campaign to rid Spain of the Moors. The extensive Arab gardens (pictured here), containing pools and shaded by cypress trees, offer a cool respite from the summer heat.

La Giralda

by traveldave

Seville's trademark is La Giralda, a 305-foot (93-meter) tower that originally served as a minaret for a mosque built between 1184 and 1196 during Moorish rule. The mosque was razed after the Moors were evicted from Seville in 1284 during the reconquest. However, the tower was kept and converted into a steeple for Seville's Cathedral, constructed on the site of the old mosque.

Golfing in Murcia

by Tayto

ok I'm not a great golfer ...in fact not even a good golfer...but I can still appreciate a great golf course and Mosa Trajectum south of Murcia in Spain is just beautiful. The course itself is well established and there are a good selection of villas already built. These are built to a high spec with pool etc etc. The club house is nice and serves good food. However it was quiet when we were there in September. I guess it is busier in the summer months. The only draw back is that its the only place to eat / drink without having to drive somewhere which is a pity that there are not another few bars on the site. However I beleive it is expanding and there should be more facilities including gym, shopping, etc soon. The club is backed by Johann Cryuff one of the most famous dutch footballers of all time....though unfortunately we didn't get to meet him on our trip....maybe next time

Toledo

by blint

The highpoint in Toledo history for me is the time leading up to 1492 when Jews, Christians and Muslims all lived together in peace. Of course, a situation like that couldn't last forever, and when Granada fell to the Catholics in 1492 the Jews and the Muslims had to get out of Spain all together! Though some cunning people, especially in the Toledo area, decided that their best bet was to convert. Now Toledo is a beautiful historic town where they have managed to preserve many of the Jewish and Muslim buildings and artifacts even if they didn't preserve their cultures. There are of course plenty of Christian buildings too (such as the Cathedral) and plenty of knight's armour, swords and knifes that fill the shops. To Find out why:Please check out my Toledo tips on my Casilla-La Mancha page.
