ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE,(Vall de Boí)

by Hosell

Another very nice place to see if you are travelling on Catalunya or Pyrenees areas is this nice valley:VALL DE BOÍ Allmost all little village on that valley has a beautiful Romanesque Church, all of them are also designed by UNESCO as World Heritage. The best and most beautiful ones are located on the small towns of Boí and Taull, and they are more than 1,000 years old, because they were built on XI century. This picture was taken at Taull.

Tappas Bars

by shellac

This is a "must" experience! My recommendation is to visit San Sebastian, find a nice room in a pensionne and hit the tappas bars in the old section. You walk in, order a beverage and start picking away at all the food lined up on the bar. The bartender will keep track and when your done cash out and head to the next bar. The bigger cities like Barcelona, will have "chain" Tappas Bars, avoid them if first impression has an affect on you. San Sebastian is one of the coolest places in Spain, it's paradise. The Tappas Bars can be daunting, just stroll in and watch the locals do thier thing, after a couple minutes you see a rhyme to the madness. Hint: the dirtier the floor (sawdust, toothpicks and napkins), the better the Bar!!!!!!

Cuidad Encantada (The Enchanted City)

by blint

This is not a real town but instead and area of interesting rock formations that are incredible to see. It you have a vivid imagionation too many of the rocks are said to resemble animals or human constructions. For example keep and eye out for the seal (La Foca), the Roman Bridge (Puente Romana), the dog (El Perro) and much more.Don't worry if you don't think the rocks look enchanted because it's just a great experience to see these wonderful eroded rocks which have been left in wierd shapes whether you think they look like things or not!It costs 3 euros to enter and there is a gift shop at the enterence and also a hotel if you fancy spending ther night. You can see more photos of Cuidad Encantada on my Castilla-La Mancha page:Take me to Castilla-La Mancha and Cuidad Encantada

Almeria and El cabo de Gata

by blint

The province of Almeria is the driest in Spain; in fact it is practically desert. It is hard to grow anything here so you'll find that much of the countryside is covered in plastic! The plastic is in fact large greenhouses! This is where all those spaghetti Westerns were filmed. You can even visit the 'Mini Hollywood' set near Benahadux in the north of Almeria where Clint Eastwood and Raquel Welch made films such as The Good the Bad and the Ugly. It is open from 10-9pm in summer and to 7pm the rest of the year. You need a car to get there. Call 0034 950 365236.El Cabo de Gata has some of the most stunning coastline in Spain (see photo). It is just wonderful to walk along the coast and sit on tiny almost private beaches. It is a great place to go rock climbing! I had great fun! Try to avoid July and August when it's packed with Spanish tourists escaping the city heat!Almeria City does not...

Valencia

by blint

Valencia is Spain’s 3rd largest city located down coast from Barcelona. It is in the Province of Valencia below Catalunya. Like Catalunya it has it's own dialect which is basically catalan. Valencia city has a population of 800,000 people. It is the home to many interesting fetivals including Las Fallas de San José in mid march where they built giant bonfires and fireworks, large papier mâché figures and dance all night to music. Another party not t be missed is the Feria if you are visiting in July (see my feria tip for more info). From a gastronomic viewpoint Valencia shines as the home to Paella the famous Spanish dish. The paella is better and more authentic here than anywhere else. If you come to Valencia it would be a crime not to try some!Valencia was founded by the Romans in 138BC calling it ‘Valentia’ since then it has changed hands many times mainly between the Muslims and the...

Teruel and Mudejar!

by blint

Teruel is a small regional capital in Aragon and is also the home to the wonderful Mudejar arcitecture which is basically a mix between Muslim/ islamic and Christian design. The mudejar towers which are scattered all over the town really make Teruel special, though the large blue seminary building already makes up your mind that you are gonna love Teruel when approach the town. It hangs out over the city and looks remarkable lit up or night or protruding proudly by day.You can also visit the amantes (lovers) who were are Spain version romeo and juliet. Diego and Isabel were in love then he went off to fight because Isabels parents said he was too poor for their daughter. THey gave him five years to be worthy. He retured on Isabel's wedding day! To clarify lets just say it was her wedding day not his! Of course he was heartbroken. He asked her for one last kiss and she turned him down; he...
