I was very curious about Cuenca, and needing to pass not far to spend a week in the south, I decided to make a detour and to stop there. Excellent idea, and Cuenca has now its page growing in my VT list.

Albacete

by solopes

For more than 50 years Albacete occupied a place in my imagination, as the location of a remarkable castle. Twenty two years ago I passed nearby, and... SAW the castle from distance, regretting not to have time to stop. This year I passed again in Albacete, WITH time to stop. I left Fernanda in a shopping and ran searching for the castle that... it was not there. I asked a local and he said that Albacete never had a castle. Unbelievable.I made a quick visit to the highlights of the city, but nothing could replace the missing castle.Back home I verified my books and discovered that the dreamed castle is located in Almansa, not far from Albacete, but... not there, indeed.

Torremolinos

by solopes

I've been several times in Torremolinos, always oriented to the beach. This time, I found a different city, several hundred meters from the beach, amd met a city that lives for... tourism in the beach. Much bigger than I thought, however!

The Alcázar

by traveldave

The Alcázar of Seville was originally a Moorish fort built in the twelfth century during Moorish dominion over Spain. Later, the Almohads built a palace on the site of the old fort called the Al-Muwarak. Subsequent rulers added to the palace. Although today's Alcázar is a fine example of Moorish mudéjar architecture, it was actually built by a Spanish king after the Moors were expelled from Spain. The entire Alcázar was rebuilt between 1350 and 1369 by King Pedro I, the Cruel. At that time, all that remained from the original Al-Muwarak was a section of wall and some gardens. After it was completed, King Pedro I lived in, and ruled from, the Alcázar. King Pedro I followed the original plan for the Al-Muwarak to make the new palace as close to the original as possible. This included the palace itself, the gardens, and the Islamic-style decorative flourishes. Many of the workmen employed by...

The Mezquita

by traveldave

Begun in 785 A.D. and not completed for over 200 years, the Mezquita was the second-largest mosque in the Islamic world. Inside, 850 pillars support two tiers of candy-striped arches. When the Moors were expelled from Cordoba, the Mezquita was converted into the Church of the Virgin of the Assumption. Later additions in Gothic, Renaissance, Italian, and Baroque styles made the building an interesting mix of architectural styles.Pictured here is the 305-foot (93-meter) Torre del Alminar, which was built on the site of the original minaret.

The Centro de Arte Reina Sofía

by traveldave

The Centro de Arte Reina Sofía houses one of the world's largest collections of modern art, and features works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Joan Miró, to name but a few.The most famous painting in the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is Pablo Picasso's Guernica, an allegory of the bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. I am not impressed by modern art, but it was worth it to visit the museum just to see this renowned painting.

Tip Photo
The Museo del Prado

by traveldave

The Museo del Prado houses one of the top three most impressive collections of art in the world, the other two being the Louvre in Paris, and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. The Museo del Prado was founded by King Fernando VII in 1819. The museum owns over 7,500 paintings, only one-sixth of which are on permanent display. The top floor is devoted to the Spanish masters, including Diego Velázquez (his Las Meninas is probably the most famous painting in the museum), El Greco, and Francisco de Goya. The Museo del Prado also has an important collection of Italian, Flemish, Dutch, and German masterpieces.

The Palacio Real

by traveldave

The Palacio Real, or Royal Palace, was commissioned by King Felipe V, designed by Italian master architects Sacchetti and Sabatini, and built in 1734. The palace was so opulent that Napoleon claimed the Spanish king had better lodgings than his own at the Tuileries in Paris. Nowadays, the Palacio Real is no longer the residence of the Spanish monarchs, but is instead a museum open to the public. Visitors can wander around the royal apartments, the Dining Room, the Throne Room, and the Gasparini Rooms. The Campo del Moro Garden (pictured here) are also open to the public.
