Sevilla. The Capital of Andalucia.

by blint

Sevilla (or Seville in English) was called Hispalis in Roman times and Ishbiliya in Muslim times! It has always been a very important city and it still is today! THE ALCÁZARYou may recogize the Alcázar as the palace in Star Wars The Phantom Menace! It was built as far bac as 913 and has expanded much since then. It relly is one of the most beautiful sights in all of Andalucia. If you come to Sevilla you simply HAVE to see it even if you don't enter. For those who do fancy seeing inside the enrance is in Plaza del Triumfo. It s open from 9:30 until 7 in thesummer and until 5 the rest of the year. It is free for students, pensioners and childen under 12.THE CATHEDRAL The Sevillano cathedral s one of the largest in the world. It is 126m by 83m. It was built in 1507 though after the dome collapsed in 1511 some of the gothic architecture was replaced by renaissance design. It has some...

Ciudad Rodrigo

by blint

Situated in Castilla y Leon only 30 km from Portugal Ciudad Rodrigo is a very pleasant historic town. It is a great place to stop for the night on a a road trip. It is a small town with a population of 14,900 people and there is never much going on there. However it is a great place to spend a couple of hours looking round the historic monuments such as:The Cathedral which was started in 1165, Iglesia de San Isidoro (church), the Ayuntamiento (town hall), the 16th century Palacio de los Castrob (mansion) or the lovely Plaza Mayor (main Square) where you can sit outside in one of the many cafes and relax. The town hall featured in the photo below can be found in Plaza Mayor. It is also worth taking a walk round the town and looking out over the town walls (where there is a great walkway). In February they have a carnaval (carnival) in which they also stage the Running of the Bulls....

Ronda

by blint

Ronda is in the province of Malaga in Andalucia. It is located over a 100m deep gorge called El Tajo and is surrounded by pretty mountains and scenery. You get many foreign tourists here and it is a University town too, attracting people from all over the world. In Muslim times Ronda was actually the capital of a near independent mini state.Part of Hemmingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls was based on events that took place in Ronda during the Spanish Civil war. If you like the ‘sport’ of bull fighting, maybe you’d like to check out the bull ring (Plaza del Toros, Calle Virgin de la Paz) which is one of the oldest in Spain (opening in 1785). It also contains some photos of Hemmingway and Orson Welles in the Taurino museum. If you would rather just look at it than enter, also take a look at the great views to be seen behind the bull ring in the Alameda del Tajo park.Of course the main to see...

Madrid: The capital of Spain!

by blint

Spain became the manmade capital of Spain for its location in the dead centre of the country. It was supposed to be a symbol of unification and centralisation created by Felipe II who moved the government here in 1561. Though being in the dead centre of the Iberian Peninsula has some disadvantages. For example it's a long way to travel to be beside the sea side and because it is on a 650m height Plateau it is very cold in winter and very hot in summer! There is so much to do see especially if you are into art! For this is the home of the Prado; which in turn is the home to many great works of art such as:Goya, Velazquez, El Greco,Botticeli,Raphael, Rembrandt and many many more! The other top art gallery to go to is the Arte Reina Sofia which hosts Picasso's Guernica, Dali, Miro, Frances Bacon and loads more!Apart from the galleries also visit: The Palacio Real (Royal Palace),Plaza...

Avila

by blint

This town is cold. It is set on a high plain (1130m) with a mountain backdrop. It is very close to Madrid. It is surrounded by 11th century walls. It is quite spectacular to see. Though inside the walls Ávila is a small town and there is not much to see(It has a population of 38,200 people). It's best to use Ávila as a place to stop off on the way somewhere else or as a day trip from Madrid. Interestingly enough there is a myth that a son of Hercules founded the city. There are the usual churches to see and the Convent of Santa Teresa built on her actual birthplace in 1636. She was a mystic and reformer and now many worship her. The city walls are by far the best thing about Avila.

Cáceres

by blint

Located in Extremadura in the middle west of Spain, above the province of Cadiz and below Castilla and leon, Caceres is simply stunning. The old town is completely preserved behind its original walls and it really is like going back in time. Historians will love it. It hasn't changed much since the 15th or 16th century. The old town is named the Cuidad Monumental and you enter it through the original gate. Once inside I don't have to tell you what to see because it's the whole thing: Every building or mansion. It is very different from the architecture of the south. It's more Christian than Moorish. You can also visit the Museum in Plaza de Las Veletas. It even contains some works by Picasso and Miro. It is open 9-2:30 and on Sunday 10:15-2:30.Go to Cáceres: You won't regret it!!!!

León

by blint

The historic centre of this town is one of the most impressive in Spain. It' gorgeous. It's also the capital of the province Castilla y leon and a lively university town. Hosting loads of interesting cafes and bars. The Cathedral in Leon dates back to the 13th centuary and are gothic in design. It has the best stained-glass windows (128 in total). If you venture inside the cathedral you'll also see a silver urn containing the remains of Saint Froilan (the patron saint of León). It's open from 8:30 to 1:30 and 4 to7 everyday. You can find it in Plaza de Puerta Obispo.Other sites to see are:Real Basilica de San Isidoro (founded in 1063) and the Panteón Real are of the kings who united the kingdoms of Leon and Castilla in 1037. The church dates back to the 12th century and has a little Moorish influence too. The Panteón was constructed between 1054 and 1063, which makes it one of the earliest...

Segovia

by blint

Segovia is in the province of Castilla y leon in North West Spain, close to Madrid. This is where Walt Disney got his inspiration for sleeping beauty's castle. The one in Segovia is in fact a Muslim Alcazar. It's worth coming to Segovia just to see it.Another great attraction in Segovia is the Roman Aqueduct which is the most impressive I've seen. It was built in the 1st century it is about 29m high. The stones have been carefully placed on top of the other without cement!Segovia has much to offer but these two suggestions have to be the best.

Salamanca

by blint

This is a very lively town with a population of 160,500. It is also a university town so is filled with energy and cool places to go out or have a coffee. On top of that it's a very old town (dating back to BC) and is incredibly beautiful. It's definitely on of the most beautiful cities in Spain. It's also a great place to study Spanish. If you go to Salamanca you should go to Plaza Major, The Catherdral, the Civil University or one of Salamanca's many Museums and Convents. You really are spoilt for choice here, but wondering round the streets are great in itself.Plaza Major was between 1729 and 1755, it was designed by Alberto Churriguera and is possibly the prettiest main Square in Spain!El Catedral Nueva is the centre piece of Salamanca. It's style is late gothic and Renaissance, however the Catedral Vieja was started in 1120 though it does incorporate some gothic elements. The...

Gerona

by blint

This is an incredibly well preserved medieval town and also a very important centre for Jewish history in Spain (it has the best preserved Jewish Quarter in Western Europe). There is a Jewish Heritage Museum (Centre Bonasruc ca Porta off c/de la Forca) which tells you about the Jewish history of the town and Spain in general (And how the Jews were viciously expelled by the inquisition so by the time Hitler arrived on the arrived on the European scene there were no Jews to expel from Spain. One very good reason he and Franco were good pals). You can also try very good typical Catalan food in Gerona. It's only a quick day trip from Barcelona.
